i am a product of the 1960's. i spent 33 years working for the department of housing and urban development. here is what happened. the 1968 riots, we had the riots after king was assassinated. and then the poor blacks in our cities burned their own housing, so a small group of individuals that i know, and very few people know who they were, set up hud. arounds small group went the country, chicago, baltimore, jacksonville, florida, they purchased the worst sections of land and they financed and developed multi family high-rise projects, and housed these poor blacks. and they made millions, and today, billions of dollars. fast-forward 50 years, they have been living in those projects in certain sections of baltimore, chicago, los angeles, for the last 50 years. there were school systems -- weren't school systems, no jobs. they interviewed a printable and asked, how can you have a dropout rate of 56%? she said, what do you want me to do, tell them, you need to stay in school and get a high school diploma so you can g

in the 1870's. it took decades before the existing factories were reconfigured, before existing machinery was replaced, before manufacturers could take full advantage of the possibilities of this new technology. similarly, you had telephones that had been invented in the 19th century, but in many countries they came into widespread use only after world war ii. jet airplanes. those sort of innovations. it could not really be continued. many of the things that drove higher productivity were one-time events and were exhausted. once you brought those farm workers into manufacturing, you could not do it again. the rest were these unpredictable technological advances that got incorporated into the economy at an unpredictable rate. that was great while it lasted. and then it stopped happening. since then, in general, productivity growth has been slower. we had one exception, which somewhat illustrates how this works. in the late 1990's, we had three or four years of rapid productivity growth surrounding the

the s&p 500 is up about 5% of the year. it's up 3% this month. and people are scratching their heads. i don't know about you guys, but during the middle of the trading day yesterday, i was scratching a lot of other things listening to the president speak. i'm shocked people weren't reaching for protection. the way i think about this, if you have nice gains or are getting nervous, option prices in indexes like the spy look really attractive for outright purchases. the first chart is 2200. that's the breakout late november, early december. and then the air pocket. i'm going to use the spy. i want to buy when the stock was trading 34.70. may 2.30, may 2.10 put spread, that costs about $2.75. that breaks out about 227.25. that's down about 3% from the haven't stock price. i think 2.10 may be an aggressive target here. but when we had such a low period of volatility, if we were to get a vol shock, i think you would be disappointed if you had too tight of a spread here. i like the risk/reward relationship. risks 2.75 to possibly make 17.25 on a 10% pul
