and the s&p 500 gained 0.3% on the week. semiconductor maker advanced micro devices saw the heaviest selling in the tech sector thanks to its disappointing quarter and decision to cut staff as it faces a fast- changing computer market. a.m.d. shares lost 16.8% on heavy volume. other chip stocks were lower too. n-vidia fell 5.9%. investment bank f.b.r. cut its rating to market perform due to the ongoing weakness in traditional computer sales. intel, which had its own disappointing results earlier this week, fell 1.9%. but the earnings weakness extended beyond technology. mcdonald's turned in disappointing results for the second quarter in a row. earnings were four cents below estimates as restaurant sales growth slowed to its lowest pace in nine years. mcdonald's also cautions october sales have continued on that slower trend. it was the worst percentage loser among the dow industrial stocks, falling 4.5%. this is its lowest price since late august. both mcdonald's and fellow dow stock general electric saw business slow in eu

the s&p 500 shot up to its highest price of the day just after 10 a.m. eastern time on the heels of the better than expected manufacturing data. but prices trended lower throughout the session, ending up 0.3%. trading volume was 671 million shares on the big board. just under 1.8 billion on the nasdaq. the best stock sector was the consumer staples area, up 0.7%. it was followed up health care, up 0.6%, and the energy sector rising 0.5%. in the consumer staples sector, it was a couple of food stocks topping the gains. tyson foods may have benefited jpmorgan is named because it bought bear stearns as that investment bank was collapsing four and a half years ago. shares of jpm up 1.2% during the regular session it did see a little selling pressure in extended hours trading this is a single complaint alleging fraud. in the consumer staple sector it was a couple of food stocks topping the gains. tyson foods may have benefited from the american farm bureau responding to rumors of a bacon shortage last week. the farm group calls bacon shortage baloney. tyson s

the s&p is also down 3% from its september multiyear high. and there are more worrisome stats for you in a poemoment. first, here's how we stand right now. it's been down from the get go this morning. didn't help with alcoa's earnings last night. all kinds of other influences pushing it south. we're down 125 right now at 13,348. a decline of almost 1%. the nasdaq, which has been the lagger lately, is not so today. down less than .5% or 14 points at 3,505. the s&p is down 8-plus. september, as you know, may be historically the worst month for stocks. if you know your market history, you know october is not far behind, accounting for three of the worst ten months 1929, 1987, each of which had market crashes, and then there was 2008 at the height of the financial crisis. we're wondering whether this october will be a bad one as well. >> look at some of those declines from the worst months in the past. we're going pose that question in today's "closing bell" exchange. tim friedman of elevation, rob of the jensen quality growth fund along with rick

the dow and s&p closing at the lowest level in seven weeks, the nasdaq fell within two points of its 200-day moving average, all ten s&p sectors ended lower led by materials and energy. well, oil, by the way, dropping 2% closing the day at its lowest level since mid july. we had an analyst yesterday who said it was going to drop another 10%. prices fell nearlyy$2 to settle under $87 a barrel, and gold, gold falling to its lowest level in nearly seven weeks and disappointing earnings prompted investors to seek safety in the u.s. dollar. the precious metal dropped 1% falling nearedly -- nearly 14. liz: tim mulholland is in the pits of the cme, joe keating and jeff flock wreak down today's -- break down today's big selloff. plus we'll have analysis of facebook numbers as soon as they hit the tape. let's start with tim mulholland in chicago on the pits there and, i guess, right off the bat did the news warrant a 200-plus-point drop in the dow jones industrials in such a significant market sell off, or is it not that significant? >> well, i don't think it's that significant in the context,
