if you're of the 80th percentile on the s.a.t., that means only 20 people out of every 100 got a highers at the 80th percentile what that means is a fall of the americans in the united states only 20 of them live in a zip code with a combination of education and income as high as your zip codes. let's take a sip code 2007. that's georgetown. it's percentile score is 99.6. [laughter] out of all the zip codes and northwest washington west of the park and the two tiers of the zip codes of the border of d.c. in montgomery county, it is correct that kensington has the lowest. 96.7. all the others are the 99 percentile. in washington looks like there's a world of difference between georgetown and kensington compared to the rest of the nation on the top of the pyramid. that wouldn't be so bad by the way those in virginia i shouldn't leave you out all the way from great falls and through arlington all the zip codes, 99th percentile. this wouldn't be so bad if the people who came from washington group and pleases most americans still live. cities like buffalo or peoria or waco or trenton or smal

[laughter] and so, you know, i think -- i think this is sort of the world we are trapped and. be realized that is actually not all there is. there is more to life and more that we should be experiencing. so i was thinking about this problem and gradually i became aware of this other

the baptist was his mentor. you don't know that, you don't know that western civilization. these are white kids. these are kids whose s.a.t. scores are shoot through the roof and they don't understand that. and that's not just happening in berkeley. and i noticed that there's not much of an interest in what you call the classics or what you call, you know, of american history or culture. and i find it appalling. so i think -- i think she's correct about that. so there is a certain uniformity. people go along to get along. >> host: there's several lists out there, ishmael reed, and you're on some of them, of books you should read. >> guest: uh-huh. >> host: when you see those lists, what do you think? >> guest: i like the books -- the one i'm with. i've tried my hand at cartoons. so this is -- this is my illustrated book. the "new york times" says i'm a pioneer of graphic novels but they were doing graphic novels of dickens, john did a graphics novel called "big money" so i've been fortunate enough to be a publisher myself. so the two people who were responsible for publishing my recent books, i published them first. the f

the judging bush book. bush is a bright guy. psychologists have studied this and we have is s.a.t. scores. enough to be president. he is 26-32nd other presents a look at the numbers. is clear smart enough to be president. but he does tend to see things in black and white, especially in areas he doesn't understand. that did not help his decision-making. you're telling me to do this, i'm going to go the other way. he is extremely loyal, and generally we think of loyalty as a very good characteristic. president bush is a good husband and father. frankly, most politicians are not. that's not a small thing. but we can be too low. i think the president loyalty to dick cheney and don rumsfeld did not serve him well. a great leader has to be ruthless and you have to be willing to fire people who are not working out. and promote people who aren't even if you don't like them as much. i would called president bush for that. moving on from some the psychological issues i would say if you look at iraq in particular, these let you sort of force and unforced errors your i actually regard invading iraq as

s.a.t.'s are projector of your first year college success. in other words if everything stays the same. everything is never going to stay the same for a freshman. nothing is going to say the same for a freshman so you are measuring something that is almost abstract. you know, if you can look at that test as an evaluation as opposed to an admissions metric you can say richard has a map rob lum so we want to intervene right now and make sure that we help him with his math problem so he can do the next thing as opposed to saying richard has a math problem so we are not going to let him in the school. so i really raise questions about the content of these tests, what they measure and widely used these tests exclusively to measure success of our young people's. >> sure and i think that is where the broader set of common standards comes into play. doesn't just become about teaching to the test of the more the test is one factor but it is not the only factor. one of the things that continues to remain a challenge for many children of color and students of color is that by and large you can see
