the s.w.a.t. team breached a wall of his home with explosives then went in with a robot and so-called pole camera. the suspect was apparently found dead on the balcony area. this began about 7:00 last night when police got a call a drunken suicidal man on the 2600 block of senter road near lewis. three officers responded to the call. here's chief esquivel to explain what happened next. >> the suspect was despondent intoxicated and possibly had access to weapons including a rifle. officers responded on scene. as they approached the residence, still on the sidewalk approaching the residence, the suspect fired at the officers from his residence fatally striking an officer. >> the girl, and then the guy, shot him in the head with the rifle. that was it. you heard the shot but then you seen the [ indiscernible ] so it was bad. >> reporter: witnesses say the shot likely came from the balcony area where that suspect was found dead. officers returned fire. it's possible the suspect was injured during that time

the s.w.a.t. team breached an adjacent wall of his apartment with explosives. and they went in with a robot and heat-seeking cameras. the suspect was apparently found on the balcony area. this all began just before 7:00 last night when police got a call of a drunken suicidal man on the 2600 block of "senter road" at least three officers responded to the call. they knew he had access to weapons and possibly a rifle. officers spotted him as he came out on the balcony. shortly after that there were calls over the radio of an officer down and here's how it played over the radio. >> suspect [ indiscernible ] officer down, suspect had rounds at him possibly went down, as well. the suspect had rounds at him. possibly went down, as well. just confirmed at the address. >> affirm. >> faces "senter road." >> reporter: witnesses say the officer was shot in the head likely never even saw it coming. the officers returned fire. it is possible that the suspect was injured during that time because there were no other shots reported after that. michael johnson 14-year veteran, 12

e we saw the s.w.a.t. team, local police, we saw guns drawn in a really, really kind of volatile situation. and as we have seen this play out, we have seen police move from location to location. really without any clue of exactly where this guy is. the residents i talked to, we'll hear from one of these residents shortly, were really fearful about this. there's apartment homes just behind this parking garage r a number of those residents were woken up to the sound of helicopters at 3:30 this morning. what do you do? they were told to stay inside the house and that's exactly what they did. i informed them that this guy is still out there, they were quite shocked. they were under the impression that it was taken care of. guy in the hospital he attempted to commit suicide, booked last friday. somehow he gets ahold of this gun and makes his way out of the hospital, took control of a vehicle and appears he dumped that vehicle and has now found another vehicle. we'll have more updates on our news 4 app. >> thank you.
