as was mentioned, the study did not include the biggest event in san francisco, the outdoor festivals and street fairs. in a recent study conducted by san francisco state, they were generated -- estimated to have generated more than $60 million. hundreds of thousands of visitors come to san francisco for gay pride, to the jazz festival, for the chinese new year. they are paying our taxes, taking airbuses, spending our money -- spending their money in our businesses. i have been an advocate for night life and culture for many years, and such advocacy recently -- such advocacy revolves around a crisis. usually when we advocate for night live, we have to rely on anecdotal evidence or platitudes about how important the night life economy is. that is why the study is so important. it allows for a holistic approach. you now have a far more complete picture of the benefits of night live in san francisco. it cannot be understated. it is important to us. we know that helping the entertainment scene thrive is important. it makes san francisco a more attractive place to live in me know that it i

the bar association of san francisco encourages you to enact the proposed save san francisco civil rights ordinance. on a measure enacted in portland, ore., local police and civil-rights communities, this the decision would ensure members of the police department participating in counter- terrorism activities may do so in a matter that is fully consistent with faith and local civil rights protections. over the years, we have been a leader in nurturing the standards. especially given our role in treating these standards, we were discovered -- we were unhappy to learn and that the sfpd entered into a memorandum with the fbi which would allow and the standard to be blocked. we also communicated our concerns to the police commission last year. this legislation is consistent with law standing for civil liberties and concern for the rights of historical underrepresented and or marginalized communities. we respectfully ask that you support this important legislation. thank you. supervisor kim: thank you. next we have -- george lipman. semaa. >> good afternoon. i am here as one of many profession

in order to get donations they tell the city of san francisco they're saving all the animals and san francisco is a no kill city but in fact, i found out that they are far from it. i accidently found out by going to safeway, i ran into a woman with a pit bull and she said there is one just like him at the spca that is about to be put down and five said they are no kill and she said they're not. i went down and found out that the spca was having her foster that dog which got me curious. we went back to the kennels that animal care and control and she started pointing out all the dogs that the spca had rejected and started investigating and found out that at the time they were only taking 14 percent of the dogs and the rest were coming from the central valley and other shelters >> what is wrong with that in your eyes? >> they're called the san francisco spca and they sell themselves to the public as the city's shelter, that they're saving animals within our city and instead what they're doing is going to i kill shelters and cherry picking the cute and fluffy ones or the highly adoptable

as a retired public school teacher of the san francisco unified school district in the city college of san francisco, it is the dream of teachers like me to see young folks like you doing such meaningful work. and what an impressive representation tonight. you should give yourself a big hand for that. you get more used to be involved in your inspirational works. i have been working with neighborhood leaders as a community advisory board from the asian pacific island police, and the bay view police station. we are thankful that under the leadership and hard work of captains and officers, there has been a big dent in crime in san francisco. it is the concern that i am here to thank them and the san francisco police department. for many years, members of the police department have conducted a christmas toy drives her children in san francisco. it consists of several public events where toys and funds are collected and distributed to children in public housing, low- income neighborhoods, and neighborhoods in the. i want to thank the chief going to the different schools and the golden rule

i am the chair of the san francisco youth commission. the commission is concerned with families -- family flight. our -- scope is not limited to that. what affects the adult population definitely affects children. we are not talking about youth jobs or transportation patterns. we need to prioritize our families because they include young people. they include adults. we as a city think about these things together, that is how we can best address family flight. i want to say on behalf of the commission, we're looking forward to your policy proposals and how we can provide input. we want to do a similar hearing on family flight and invite other young people to come up with ideas how to address this on a policy proposal. we have a list of things the commission is doing on this issue. we can provide that for you as well. we gave it to the director. thank you for holding this hearing. supervisor farrell: thank you. >> i work with the bernal heights neighborhood center. this issue is incredibly important for the vibrancy of the city and the futu

and we look back at the rich history of the san francisco municipal railway, from their historic trolley cars to the world famous cable cars. all straight ahead on the second look. hello everybody, i'm frank somerville, tonight we say happy birthday to san francisco's public transit system, the municipal railway. over the past century, muni has carried people on cars' buses, metro trains, taking them to work, school, shopping or just a tour of the city by the bay. it was on december 28th, 1911 that 50,000 people turned out to witness the start of this system. the full slated centennial events are still in the works. one of the first, the re- introduction of street car number one, the very first one that muni ever bought. they set off to pennsylvania for a 1.9 million work, now it is back in the city and will soon be put back into service on the f-line, the line filled with the historic trolley cars, running between the wharf and up market street, joining other historic street cars like this one. it was made to look like the one that harvey mill, the first openly guy supervisor, rode in t

, the san francisco coalition, members of the local 261 who work hard with us from getting the bond pas sed, san francisco capital planning committee, the office of the city administrator, norman kelly is here, the mayor's office of public finance, the mayor's office of disability, the san francisco planning department, others and all the staff, the public utilities commission. we have been working hard with them to make sure that we support all of the projects and that we will be ready to implement. we're here today to launch the bond program that will make a significant -- that will make significant repairs to our streets and build new streetscapes for many neighborhoods. last week, the board of supervisors unanimously approved the sale of the first round of bonds. we're very happy about that. we're getting ready to start work. i will ask our mayor to come up and say a few words. mayor ed lee.
