the question. and, you know, san francisco since the beginning of this pandemic, through not only the rental subsidies that we had through the city and county of san francisco, that try to provide some additional rental assistance to make sure that when this is over that people are still responsible for that rent and will need to pay it. we just found out from the federal government that san francisco will be given $26 million in stimulus money to help with rental assistance. this will be significant. we know that it's not just the people who are struggling to pay their rent, but some of the small property owners and others who might be struggling because they're not receiving that additional income. there is hope with this new $26 million and i'm excited to see what that does to help to address some of the challenges that exist. because what we don't want to happen is that we don't want -- after this pandemic is over, we don't want to see a lot of people getting evicted and we also don't want to see a situation where so many small property owners who rely on this income to help to cover the expenses

the pandemic. we have an incredible village in san francisco. in a matter of weeks we got the program up and running with the help of community organizations, city departments and private partners. i especially want to thank the department of youth and families and phil ginsburg from recreation and parks who stepped up and drove this program from the beginning. thanks to the hard work of every one involved over the past three months of operation we served 2000 students at 78 locations throughout the city. that is 2000 students who have been able to get help with distance learning, receive healthy food and snacks, and most importantly have a place to go where they could be around other kids their own age. that is thousands of san francisco parents who can focus on working during the day, knowing their children are being looked after. these hubs have made a difference in people's lives. they have been safe, even during this challenging time. from day one, keeping our young people in the hub, staff safe and healthy is the top bright. the community h

the unemployment rates for san francisco are in the red bubbles there. that's just for san francisco city and county. it's as low as 2.3% back in january and february. it's currently -- or in october, it was 6.9%. it's come down from the high points of april, may, and june, but i expect that we don't see this data yet because it hasn't been reported, that we will likely see increases in november and december. what the bars are showing is the number of the labor force unemployed. in october there were 27,000 people added to the number of unemployed in san francisco and about 5,000 that left the labor force. these could be discouraged workers no longer seeking employment. the other number is the total number of unemployed individuals, 40,072. so again, the bar showing what was added in that month, but there is an ongoing 40,072 unemployed in san francisco. the next slide here is showing recovery compared to how san francisco compares to other counties. san francisco is there in the middle and we're showing comparisons for january 2020, both for may and octo
