the san francisco park commission accepted a $100,000 gift from the estate to build a memorial in the city and county of san francisco contributed an additional $200,000 and the stadium was built in a year. in the 1930s it was home to several colleges such as usf, santa clara and st. mary's for competition and sporting. in 1946 it became home to the san francisco 49ers where they played nearly 25 years. the stayed de yam sat 60,000 fans. many caught game the rooftops and houses. the niners played the last game against the dallas cowboys january 3, 1971 before moving to candlestick park. the stadium hosted other events before demolition in 1989. it suffered damages from the earthquake. it was reconstructed to seat 10,000 fans with an all weather track, soccer field and scoreboards. it hosts many northern california football championship games. local high schools sacred heart and mission high school used the field for home games. the rivalry football games are sometimes played here. today it is a huge free standing element, similar to the original featuring tall pink columns at the entr

the crisis? >> that's a great question. you know, in san francisco understand it correctly, i could be wrong, i believe housing was an essential service. the mayor made a strong commitment early on in the pandemic that we would continue to build housing as housing has been a critical issue in our city. so the housing part hasn't impacted us too much. 67 units have been going on its current time line. the bigger challenge for us was showing the families in our communities, low income families had the resources we need to survive the pandemic. many of our families didn't have the luxury of working from home, working in the zone and things of that nature. making sure they had access to covid testing and things of that nature. so i want to give a big shout out to our resident leaders, our service providers across all four sites. for those that don't know, hope sf is four sites. sunnydale is one of the four sites. and so across those four sites, the most critical thing was making sure folks in these neighborhoods which have historically have been disconne

hired some engineers to analyze the material san francisco was sending to landfill. they did a waste characterization study, and that showed that most of the material san francisco was sending to landfill could be composted. it was things like food scraps, coffee grounds and egg shells and sticks and leaves from gardening. together re-ecology in san francisco started this curbside composting program and we were the first city in the country to collect food scraps separately from other trash and turn them into compost. it turns out it was one of the best things we ever did. it kept 2.5 million tons of material out of the landfill, produced a beautiful nutrient rich compost that has gone on to hundreds of farms, orchards and vineyards. so in that way you can manage your food scraps and produce far less methane. that is part of the solution. that gives people hope that we're doing something to slow down climate change. >> i have been into organic farming my whole life. when we started planting trees, it was natural to have compost from re-ecology. compost is how i work a

this is the beginning of san francisco absolutely coming back, and the downtown core here in san francisco is feeling it this week. >> rodney, are you concerned with our image problem when i'm talking about car break-ins, crime, homelessness because it's not just our secret in the bay area. a lot of people know about it cross-country. >> yeah. you know, i think the problems exist much on the west coast, and we're all dealing with that. i'll say the city of san francisco and the police chief and the mayor are doing a great job to try to fix the city as best they can. but we're all being villages about it. we're all helping each other, and san francisco residents, if someone's lost and needs directions, let's help them out because tourism employs so many of our san francisco families and youth, and we need to make sure that that's going strong here for years to come. >> like we said, tourism is the number one industry in san francisco, not tech or anything else. rodney, if you had a magic wand, are there two or three big things it's going to take to get tourism back to pre-pandemic levels? a

i'm the president of the league of women voters of san francisco. political non profit u. we do not endorse candidates but we do take positions on issues, and actually the league in san francisco we are older then 102 years. we pre-date league of women voters national because san francisco has always lead the way. [applause] so, this summer i have the opportunity to attend the league national convention in denver and it happened to be the same weekday roe was struck down. it was really hard at first, but it was kind of exactly where i needed to be at the time and we attended a rally that evening at the denver capital. we were all gathered outside with our signs and with all our feelings and are there was a youngors r organizer on the back of a pickup struck and saying how they are going to lead the charge and continue the fight their mother and grandmothers and families fought before and this league member right behind me, she stood up and said, we are still here! i keep thinking about that fellow league member who is still fighting and still thinki

i mean we are the part of san francisco. ds with the most children under the age of 18. everybody likes to talk about how san francisco is not family-friendly, there are not a lot of children and families. we have predominately single family homes. as i said, people move here to buy their first home, maybe with multiple family members or multiple families in the same home and they laid down their roots. san francisco rising. today's special guest is monique gray. >> hi. i'm chris mannis and you're watching san francisco rising. the our guest today is marquise gray. he runs out of the office of the mayor in the city and county of san francisco. and he's with us today to talk about the recent progress of the sunnidale hope sf housing project. welcome to the show. >> good morning. thank you for having me today. >> let's start by talking about the existing residents of sunnydale and their history. >> so sunnydale was built in the 1940s for a workers. it's the largest public housing community west of the mississippi. it's about 50 acres. pretty huge. about 760 single story units one to four bedrooms. >> i understand it's an ambitious rethinking of the residences. can you briefly describe the scope of the program and hope sf's involvement? >> yeah. the work of hope sf is this idea of more than housing. that acknowledging that our public housing community, the levels of violence and poverty that are in these communities are not by accident. you know, it's our opportunity to address a system issue, you know, that people
