anymore word from the clinton or sanders campaign at this moment? >> reporter: there is a sense of anticipation but the day is wrong, if you will. both campaigns knew that it was likely this sort of a delegate math would be done but a bit of a surprise it's on the eve of the primary and not on tuesday, perhaps after new jersey is closed and i was covering bernie sanders over the last several days in california. he had expressed concern that the media might do its own calculation by contacting delegates and making this kind of call. for hillary clinton's campaign, it is a bit premature in terms of their own messaging. because she's been wanting to drive up as much as possible, voter interest in turning out on tuesday in order, from her campaign's perspective, to get a bigger win if she's going to win california or the other states involved and wanting to show strength going into the fall season and for the sanders' campaign, there has been concern that any call for secretary clinton might in fact encourage some voters simply to not participate. and so

. >> the sense that secretary clinton and sanders wanted it last night. the decision desk is an independent unit. we have been doing it since the beginning of the primary season as we have been tracking these folks and allocating the pledge delegates. we knew once we hit the number we would go over. the super delegates are different because it is an interview process. so when people will come forward and make the announcements, we did not know. we did not know until too long ago that we were go to go over like going into the day there was 113 of the super delegates that had not announced the support. we got them in about a dozen state where is people announced today. >> so the argument that the sanders campaign has been making, and i would like to you respond to it. they have a strong opinion on this. i think it is driven by principle and in the midst of the race they want people to come out and vote tomorrow that basically the super delegates can change their mind. not an actual vote. vote is only cast at the convention. and that this call is essentially

these are the sanders states so far. if you use 2008, when hillary clinton came up just short as the starting point, what are the big differences. you see some obvious differences. she lost to iowa. she won new hampshire in 2008. she lost it this time. there's some interesting small things you'd see on the map. the gold coast, the very affluent part of connecticut, she did very well here, surprisingly well. the big story why she did so well, it's the south. that's wall to wall clinton dark blue there. in 2008, this was a wipe out loss for her. a wipe out win and why. this has to do with the black vote. eight years ago, hillary clinton lost the black vote by nearly 70 points to barack obama. no surprise in the way, barack obama becomes the first black president. hillary clinton couldn't even crack 20%. you remember the way that campaign went. there was talk about that campaign that the clinton's had permanently ruptured their relationship with black voters. they would not be able to turn to them. the black vote in 2016 is

the tone seems to be positive. clinton congratulated sanders on the campaign, appreciated his strong commitment to stopping trump in the general election. they discussed a variety of issues, common goals, here is key points, they agreed to continue working on their shared agenda, including through the playoff development process of the democratic national contention. the meeting was attended it by senator sanders wife, and aides to the top candidates. we didn't think there would be a concussion at the end of this meeting. it was about starteding to thaw the ice. they took a step in the right direction. the fact that it is described as positive. the key questions, what happens after the meeting, when sanders was heating. he is going to concede. no response from senator sanders. he was all smiling. if the meeting goes well, it is the first step to work with hillary clinton. he wants to take on donald trump, he wants to help secretary clinton stays true to all of your principles and all of your supporters. technically, who runs the party apparatus
