you can see a lot of debris along the shoreline. this is the bay out here. we have done a lot of pretty significant clean up along the edge of the shoreline. evidence of remedial alternative. they looked at a host of alternatives from doing absolutely nothing to leaving the landfill in place to everything. in the end we landed on a hybrid approach that includes containment of the landfill we have gotten a head start on a lot of the hot spots. we should point out that the navy is required to follow federal criteria. you should know that one and two, they are go and no-go. we are protective or we aren't. we are in compliance or we don't go. first off we are protective of human health and the environment and compliant with all regulations. -7 are what we call balancing criteria. they just help us get the best balance for whatever our preferred alternative ends up being. and eight and nine is where we are all right now. community acceptance is the public comment period that closes november 1st. the knave serequired to evaluate all of the comments and to look at

eventually, as you move closer and closer to the shoreline, where you cannot get economically justified basement, we use piles. those are the most expensive, where we drive -- the old days, again, we used to take trees, turn them upside down and drive them until they stop. with concrete, we went to circular piles, then square piles. now we have all overcast and micro piles, numerous file types that can be tailored through the actual conditions that exist at the site. this particular case, they're making an excavation in the rock. there are some parts of san francisco where the rock is shallow. they go down and grab the rocked, and they put them at foundation on the rock and they can build 60-story tower. perfect example, as you approach the bay bridge, on the left there is the building called 1 rincon hill. that is 63 stories tall with a basement, and it sits on a foundation in rock. if you look to the left, you see the infinity. it has the shaped. that is the rock site. they dug down, put it on rock. as you move north, you come to the southern pacific building or the embarcadero center

we have higher clouds around and then the fog will situate itself along the shoreline today. t's going to aid in the cooling, the onshore flow will be back. we have the offshore flow in the upper 80s. they were prefer plant in the east bay valleys. today more 80s. 70s around the bay. east bay still quite pleasant. the 60s return to the coast and by tomorrow we have the westerly winds right along the shoreline, bringing more of that cool area in. it's all because of this area of low pressure. first thing it's doing is bringing up the fog along the coast. so once we get that onshore flow in play, then we are going to see a little bit of subtropical moisture come our way. in fact, that wants to bring in a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms to the highest elevationings of the north bay later on tomorrow. it's not likely, but you will notice the extra cloud cover in the atmosphere. we are talking 80 today in los angeles. low 60s in sacramento and back home temperatures ranging from 78 had in sunyvale. 81 campbell. it's still a pretty nice day. high clouds for redwood city.

and if you look at the shoreline amphitheater, what you see is that this is no closer than 1 mile to any community neighborhood. and if you look at the landfill, the residential neighborhoods in berkeley. and what about the military base? on alameda, this is a residential neighborhood. this is a couple of miles. you have landfills in and around here, within 1,000 feet, almost 5,000 feet to where the landfills are at. there is the close proximity to the actual residence. and the other new developments. the presumptive remedy has always been that the landfill should be capped. in many ways, this is the remedy that has been driving this. that the remedy should be consistent with the future landfill. we do not have enough information to support this plan. and we will support this analysis that is not done typically in this line of work. if you look at these -- and analysis, we will make a much better determination. this is less than 2% of what it would cost with the least expensive capping analysis to give us further confidence in what the navy is proposing. this is part of the commentary

bay mud, which is present close to the shoreline, and the green area, the crown has a very long period. when the earthquake comes, there is a link of time that it takes the ground to go from one, slosh back and forth, measured in seconds. the deeper the bay mud deposits, the greater the length of time it takes for the motion to go one direction and back. so as you approach soft sites, loose sand sites, bay mud sites, the period of the site is long. if you come along and build a tall building, and the ground is going like this, we know that tall buildings, the taller the building, the longer the period, the longer the time it takes to go from one side and back. iand the rule of thumb, every story that you add, it adds a 10th of a second to the period. if you have a 40 story building, you have a building that takes four seconds to go from one side to the other and back. now, that for second building is sitting on 100 feet of bay mud that also has a period of four seconds. the combination of those and harmony, what happens is they amplify the motion and the building will collapse. example
