let's take a look right now here across the sierra. we have some moderate to heavy snowfall, right across lake tahoe. and actually joining us live right now on the phone is john wagman with heavenly ski resort. john, first of all, thanks for joining us. we know it's been a banner ski season with all-time record-setting snow in november and december and now feet of snow. how are you guys dealing with the avalanche threats up across the sierra and the overall danger? >> well, you know, jeff, ski resorts are actually used to this type of thing. we're prepared for it and we know how to deal with it. we have snow safety procedures that we go through under heavy snow events to keep all inbound terrains safe from avalanche. it's really the area outside the ski resort in the backcountry or out of bounds that we don't actually control. and that's where people skiing or riding out of bounds or in the backcountry really need to be prepared and properly trained and properly equipped and stay on top of the snow conditions. >> so certainly, by all me

in the sierra nevada over the last three days we picked up over six feet of snow. sierra and tahoe, you can see 66 inches in alpine meadows. 5 feet exactly, kirkwood 62 inches and heavenly fest 1 inches and they are still counting. the temperatures right now are in the 40s and the 50s. the rain tonight and tomorrow morning, light rain for sunday and dry and warmer weather is coming next week. we are going to see a shift in the weather pattern, but not immediately. high surf advisory remains in affect until midnight. north, northwesterly swells up to 15 feet. watch out for sneaker waves and stropg rip currents. the -- strong rip currents. here is the leading edge of the next storm system. this is what will bring us the rain overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. we are already seeing light rain as the warm front is o -- is coming onshore. most is where the cold front is. behind this system there is another system that is coming in for your sunday. this one is going to bring us light rain for sunday. it is not looking impressive. neither one of these two storms

definitely travel impacted in the sierra nevada as a winter storm warning is in effect. rain hitting right now. it has increased in the past couple of hours. but we're beginning to see some dryer air push in to the north bay. live doppler 7 h.d., boy, zip in. busy. we're looking at the increased rain rates into the south bay and the east bay as the area of low pressure pushes to the south and east throughout the rest of the morning. so our first stop in the north bay, you can see a bit of a break around bodega bay. not the case further south around san rafael into the east. american canyon looking very wet. here's a closer look. pleasant hill and concord, you can see a heavier cell about to move into san pablo or richmond. the most moderate rain is in the east bay from union city back towards redwood city along 280. look at the reds there, around just south of milpedas around alum rock and continuing south westward, watsonville. we'll be looking at more rain in the next hour or two in the south bay but clearing parts of the north bay through the 7:00 hour and you'll notic

in the sierra, it's been plentdty of snow. we take you to the south shores and those coming down in bunches up to three feet. the freezing level is between 3 and 4,000 feet, but good enough to put together a snowball fight or two and hit the slopes. several resorts still operating. rainfall totals around the bay were either side of an inch for most of us in the valley locations, up to an inch and a half for you in the north bay and kentfield. san rafael, almost two inches. we saw almost two inches, 1.9, in the ohio valley. it was accompanied by that stiff wind last night. officially the highest gust i could find was 58 miles per hour. that was last night at los angeles international and the wind was blowing in the early morning hours as well. right now actually settled down through the north bay, across the peninsula. a couple showers lingering along mountain view. in the east bay, it's still raining at a pretty good clip, but the bulk of the moisture is shifting east into the central valley and into the sierra. still we've got

let me tell you more rain falling in the bay area. sierra is getting several more inches of snow. is closed from apple gate to the nevada state line. that is due to zero visibility. yesterday the snowplows started hitting the roads. they are trying to keep up with all that fresh snow. if you are headed to the sierra, x-to see chain restrictions posted along interstate 80 and highway 50. a big rig accident snarled westbound traffic on 80 for two hours yesterday evening. should we try to go back to lisa or come back later? all right, on to other news. san francisco police are investigating a shooting that left two people critically injured outside a nightclub. it happened in the 2400 block of san bruno avenue just after 2:00. a man and woman were found with gunshot wounds and were rushed to a local hospital. police are still gathering information about any suspects. no description has been released so far. san francisco police are investigating a possible hit-and-run after a man was found dead at a downtown intersection last night. investigators want to hear from any possible witness
