we'll talk about that plus the snow in the sierra. pam: the reason rain was the cause digit its many traffic accidents between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. this morning. california highway patrol says there were 125 reported crashes. in comparison to last wednesday, there were only 40 accidents. with more bad weather predicted, highway officials are concerned that the lives of more drivers could be at risk. >>terisa: officials say they were swamped with handling serious accidents on wednesday morning like this one involving a 48 year old man from san lorenzo. his truck was crushed in the back and look at his windshield, it is completely smashed. officials say that this was not a fatality however further south on 101, officials did deal with a fatal injury in a crash on the east hillsdale on a ramp. >>officer: i am concerned about the loss of life on the roads. we hoped people view our warnings. >>terisa: the officer says it is too early to say definitively is because of this rollover or this fatality but he says most accidents are caused wh

there's also snow in the sierra. as thousands from the bay area make their way east, they're running into warnings along the way. jeff ranieri has your radar and what's on the way. we have a look at the wet weather. and by the soaking. we begin with meteorologist, jeff ranieri who has been tracking the conditions from the weather center. >> it's been a rough patch. three to four hours. we've had the flood advisory for the east and south bay just expire. that's good news. but heavy rain across the santa cruz mountains. that's on top of 10 to 11 inches of rain in the past 3 hours. mudsde threat and flooding and san jose, it's pushing into east san jose. evergreen and milpitas starting to clear out. and downtour, getting hit by the rain. we have half an hour before we gradually start to see things slow down there. in six hours alone, two inches. and from the north bay down to san jose. three-quarters of an inch to close to one inch, in six hours. so, we're going to detail our weekend forecast. our chances of thunderstorm

tonight, the winter weather advisory is posted for the sierra nevada. here is what it looked like on the san francisco side of the golden gate bridge. gray, drizzle, traffic was moving not high wind warnings were cancelled earlier today of the elsewhere in the city there was just enough rain to wash off some of the pollen popping up lately. not enough to add to the totals this evening. >> and steady throughout the day, ktvu has more on what parts are getting hit right now. >>> and heather, the rainfall rates are picking up, in fact over the past two to three hours as you can see on storm tracker two radar, the bay area is mostly covered with the light shades of green. it is a small difference, but they indicate more moderate to higher downpours. they're showing up in the south bay, this is the radar loop over the last two hours. bring on the sweep, we'll take a closer look at some of the action right now for san francisco, oakland, richmond, san rafael, and in oakland, still the downpours are just showing you the green map here, indicating moderate rainf

. >>> the fbi now working to find missing sierra lamar. today they focused on the house where she lives, but they are expected to branch out tomorrow. investigators looked everywhere they could today. and tomorrow, their search will cover a bigger area. we are live in morgan hill with today's discoveries. >> reporter: well, investigators focused their search right here at this home behind me. 15 year-old sierra lamar's home. they wrapped up at about 9:30. the santa clara county sheriff's department says they will return in the morning to do a large scale search. the fbi and plain-clothes investigators spent much of friday in and around sierra's house. they searched inside and did a grid line search outside. fbi agents walking arms-length apart and looking for any clue to sierra's disappearance. why they were focussing on the house, we don't know. investigators wouldn't say. perhaps they were trying to retrace her steps. even after days of searching, authorities say they still don't know what happened to sierra. sierra's mother tells us the

fresh powder lining the interstate up to the sierra. rian hickey joins us in blue canyon for good news for skiers. >> reporter: the snow started falling about 4:00 this morning and it hasn't stopped. it's expected to go through today and the weekend with snow piling up. 8 inches expected here at 59,000-foot level today. higher the mountain, they're expecting feet of snow out of this first of several waves of storms that are heading toward the sierra and expected to pile up a lot of snow. in the meantime, interstate 80 behind me, very snowy. chain controls have been bouncing up and down the mountains. drivers across the way, chaining up at nyack to head up the hill. it's not so much the snow but the wind with this first wave that's bouncing the drivers around on the interstate. anyone heading up the sierra today should expect windy and snowy conditions. again, with several feet of snow forecasted to fall over the highest elevations here along interstate 80. i'm brian hickey, nbc bay area news. >>> dozens of people are forced from their ho

the fbi continues to focus the area around sierra's home. rces say family members have been questioned a number of times and have passed polygraph tests. today the areas away from the home will be searched. amazing turnout yesterday you can't say enough about it, more than 600 people turned out, the family really appreciated that. >> because of this response and the community coming together, i know sierra's chances for having a safe return is just increasing it >> reporter: one other tidbit investigators are putting out. they say the person who has sierra lamar may not live in morgan hill but is very familiar with the area. she hasn't been seen since march 16th. they found her cell phone, her purse if you take a line from the house to that cell phone to that purse and follow it on it heads towards san jose. 8:00 this morning, volunteers will be back out here at the burden net elementary school signing -- looking in areas for something that might need to the discovery or recovery of sierra lamar. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news >>> 5:05. a funeral

few flakes of snow around the northern sierra. we are looking more rain to be generated offshore and move into the bay area this afternoon. so our 24-hour storm totals quite impressive. one inch in livermore. nearly that in concord. nearly an inch in san jose and an inch, maybe an inch and a half before all is said in done? san francisco. more to come mid-week. >> carolyn: people should be prepared for all the usual traffic issues with wet roads. you might come to places where water is pooling. chp reported that westbound 80 on-ramp was flooded from buchanan. >> it happened in a instant right before 7:00 p.m. suv crashed directly into a pole on san pablo avenue that that was holding up the street lamp. the passenger in the seat did have on her seat belt. man was tha was driving was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. the crash is being investigated as a possible indictment. speed and the rainy weather appear to be factors on this crash northbound on 101. she was rear ended by a red pickup truck. truck hit the center divide

i'm not going to go into heavy detail, i want to take you down here into the sierra madre. i was following routes all over for the house of rain, trying to figure out where the anastazi went when they left house of rain. many of them made the modern pueblos but other groups continued south. i followed pottery trails down into the sierra madre where my wife and two others went out and we came to these cliff dwellings. it seemed like every single cave we looked into had cliff dwellings. and this wasn't a place with trails. this wasn't a known location. many of these sites were pristine. they were just -- it looked as if people had just left suddenly, just like all the stories in here. little cliff dwellings, little granaries, little sites falling apart. larger sites. this site went actually 5 layers deep into this cave. very particular to this region were these shaped storage rooms. this one is about 10 feet high. often they would have door stones sealing them on the top. and they were of all kinds of shapes and sizes, but they specific to that area. that's the smallest one we
