i want to ask you about the smartphone wars. recently, some doubts about the momentum of the iphone 5, with deutsche bank coming out with a note earlier this week, questioning the momentum, month on month in terms of iphone 5 sales. what are you seeing on the front lines at at&t? >> well, i don't want to specifically comment about month to month. but the iphone is a big seller for us, as are many of the android devices. samsung galaxy s-3, the samsung note. and melissa, the windows phones, which are new for us, as well, the nokia lumia is doing well. apple, android and now windows 8, which is a fantastic lineup for our customers. >> in terms of the momentum since the launch date of the iphone 5, ralph, is it at the same levelle of demand as it was when it first hit the market? >> well, what happened with the iphone 5 is, there was so much demand, there was limited supply when it first came out. right after black friday, we finally got enough inventory and so, i think it's selling very well. just like we expected it to. >> i want

so the smartphone market as we know it today is pretty mature in most advanced profits. i think obviously investors are concerned about the impact that will have in samsung's profitability overall. but as we mentioned, i think we can expect to see them move into adjacent markets in the tablet market and this other new market that's recently been transcribed as the phablet market. >> talk about where they're going to. how important is china? that's been one area apple has come under criticism for not getting it right. how important is china going forward? >> i think a lot of other hand setmakers are obviously strong in china. i think there are a lot more players. i think some of the more advanced markets are dominated right now by samsung and apple. there other players that we can't ignore like blackberry and hltgc. in china, we're seeing some of the local players like vt becoming strong there. but i think the whole android approach is potentially more successful in china on the grounds that there is much more scope for localization. it's much more flexible than the apple

"i used to have a blackberry, but an iphone is easier." "do you think this will bring back the faithful? some, but it won't be that huge." analysts liked blackberry's new phones' speed in texting, predictive abilities and business apps, but u.s. consumers won't be able to buy the phones until march - disappointing news to some. let's take on the smartphone wars from the chip makers. joinings now in a cnbc exclusive is scott mcgregor, ceo of bro c broadcom. scott, great to speak with you. >> great, melissa, good to be on the show. >> a lot of people think of you as an apple supplier, but you supply to all sorts of handsets out there. estimate out there that 13% of your rev nuchls in 2011 came from apple with about $4, $5 content in the iphone. and similar rash yoechls in the samsung galaxy. can you comment on that and given us an indication as to whether or not it matters if consumers buy the android or the iphone, from your perspective? >> melissa, broadcom makes the chips in most smartphones. we've been able to create really competitive chips out there and they are widely used across the industry. we are delighted when people buy smart foens. it's good for us and givens us sales of our chips. >> so, you are basically agnostic at the bottom -- end of the day. >> we have a few favorites but we are mostly agnostic. we've done a good job working with the customers y

the pc. smartphones and tablets are pushing down computer sales. what tech stock has staying power? > > ebay. i talked about this in my number one technology stock for 2013. what did they do? another good quarter. i think that's four or five straight quarters that ebay has rallied afterward. they have paypal, they are in the smartphone market, they are trying to do with facebook can't do, which is monetize the amount of platform of mobile. > > that is an old-school stock that has rebounded as compared to some of the others: hewlett- packard and the ibm selling the computer. so, i'm not smart enough to pick out an individual tech stock since i am an older investor. so i am just going to look at the qs and look at the nasdaq. the nasdaq as 5% more to go just to make- > > what is that, a razr? > > i have an iphone, thank you sir. > round three: a whale tale. jamie dimon is now losing money in his salary because of the whale trade. what do you guys think about that? > > i don't think it really matters if he loses money in his salary if the stock continues to go higher. we actually saw a

probably the biggest theme out of the show altogether is the smartphone as mobile hub. ten years ago, it was all about the p.c., connecting to web cams, becoming a universal remote. now all that function is built into the smartphone, and there are increasingly ways that this is a remote control for our daily lives. look at samsung's washing machines or at harmon's cars where they use a smartphone to enhance the experience. >> it is remote controlled and enabling a network in the car. if you're using at&t or verizon or sprint, you'll have to change -- you won't have to change. you'll connect. you make the car a hot spot and use your same program. you don't have to subscribe to a program for car and program for your phone. we make cars so that they will work with any phone, whether it's a motorola, samsung, or nokia or apple, and any provider. >> the reason that is possible is because smartphone penetration in the u.s. is up near 50% with android and the iphone as the main drivers of that. expect that to be a trend that we see for the next couple of years now that manufact

and alan, is apple losing its grip on the smartphone market? > > i don't think so much. i think people over-analyze the situation. i like to look at apple in a non-emotional way. treat it as a $50 stock instead of a $500 stock. just lop a zero off, and that way you can make better decisions. yes, we were up at the highs at $70, which translates into $700. we're at a sharp discount from that. but we're holding this base, and i'm going to look to see how $500 holds on a weekly basis, especially with great data coming out next week with iphone sales at potentially 50 million units. > scott, do you think $500 will hold? > > no. the pattern here is obviously very bearish. the momentum is bearish. there is nothing in the marketplace to suggest that we are rallying back to $600. now, in the long run, i think apple is a great buy. but i truly believe that in the coming months, we are going to see that flush-out that everybody has been waiting for, where all the longs that have been holding on just can't hold on any longer. and if this thing gets down into the $450 or $440 range,
