right now it is the south bay getting hit the hardest. you can see fremont, heavy downpours just came through. slick conditions there, showers rolling through milpitas. the east shore getting hit pretty hard, on your way to livermore to dublin, you'll find very dangerous conditions. a very heavy cell just passed through there. it is not cold enough for snow throughout the morning hours as temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s. but as we head through the day today and that cold blast arrives trailing behind the cold front, that's going to drop our snow levels potentially to 1,500 feet. we could see a mix of rain and snow at the 17 summit where we've been showing you live pictures all morning long. right now it is straight rain but later on when the cold air arrives, we could be talking about snow. mount hamilton could pick up to two inches of snow so we should be able to vividly see that. when we wake up on friday morning, it may take a couple days for the cold air to mix out. into the weekend, warming you right back up. we're going to s

scott mcgrew says the south bay outpacing the rest of california. good morning, scott. >> good morning. mostly good news in the latest once a year report, john, from joint venture silicon valley, really the best snapshot we have of the south bay economy. it says employment is back to 2006 levels after the valley added a staggering 42,000 jobs last year. this puts us far ahead of the rest of other regions when you think about it as job growth per capita. so here are some numbers for you. the unemployment rate in silicon valley estimated at 8.3%. that's the same as the unemployment rate nationwide. so why do we get so excited by that? remember, we live in, where generally the economy is still terrible. california's unemployment rate is 11%. now, if you're in silicon valley but you're not feeling any of the benefit i'm talking about, you are not alone. this same report says the good times are not shared by everybody. families who make a high income account for nearly half of all homes in silicon valley. and their income is going up. but those who don't

the rising price of gas. today in the bay's bob riddle is rolling all through the south bay and has the latest on that and more. hey, bob. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, john. typically, this is not where we're supposed to be at. you're looking at close to $3.80 for a gallon of gas here at the station in san jose. usually around this time of the year, we get a little bit of a break at the pump. you'll ride -- your ride into work would be costing a bit less. but that's not the case. we're actually coming off the most expensive january ever for gas prices. and here are the latest numbers. you want to take a look at them, courtesy of aaa. you can see san jose, oakland averaging like we just saw there, around $3.76 for a gallon of gas. sf, just over $3.80 and i bring these numbers up because if you were to compare a month ago, we're up by about a dime. that is unusual. in a typical january, we normally see a dip in prices. demand goes down as more people stay home, having just spent the month of december traveling for the holidays. but that has been offset this time around by a growing economy. and what fu

we're not seeing that much action in the south bay. isolated shower or two a possibility as we head throughout the morning especially down south. 41 degrees in san jose. you're at 43 in livermore, 37 in concord and you are now in the 20s, something we haven't seen for a while in santa rosa and napa. we are very, very cold up there and we have a lot of early bloom because of the very warm conditions we've had so far this winter. so, make sure if you are someone who can protect your sensitive plants that you try to do so this morning. 52 in fremont, 51 in palo alto and 52 by noon today, that's it. we're going to see temperatures in the 50s, no 60s on your temperature map. 58 for fremont, 57 in concord. and just 54 degrees in san francisco. we've got a really good looking storm on the way. this one's kind of fizzling out right now but there is a great looking storm on the way for showers later on this week we'll talk about when in my seven-day outlook coming up in my next report. let's check your drive. >> good morning. we'll take to you t

the showers this morning and some much-improved weather coming our way. scattered light showers around the bay area. and most of those have pushed into the south bay and hit and miss throughout the morning hours and then things begin to settle down, much improved weather coming our way. the cold front diving through and bringing scattered showers overnight and starting to settle down somewhat. temperatures around the bay area at this time, mainly in the 40s outside, 45 degrees in san rosa and 48 in san francisco. and 46 in san jose. it looks like temperatures by the afternoon in the 50s and the 60s. the next couple of day, something else, as the high pressure is building in and temperatures shooting up in the 70s and mid-70s on wednesday and thursday. and cooling off next weekend. that's a look at weather, guys. back to you. >> thank you, lawrence. >>> 5:05 now. federal investigators are looking into a midair collision between a helicopter and a small plane in solano county over the weekend. the crash happened about 7:00 yesterday evening near the rio vista municipal airport and an official there told the contra costa county times that neither

the south bay looks really nice as well. looking good northbound and commute out of san jose and into san jose from the south. nice flow from 101. we end with a look at the san mateo bridge crossing over the water. highway 92 moves nicely westbound with the taillights over the high-rise to the peninsula but as christina's talked about, the peninsula and north bay likely to get hit with fog today so just be prepared for that later on in the commute. back to you. >>> 5:47. we do have some new information today in the death of a 14-year-old girl at a slumber party in santa rosa. investigatesers tell the "santa rosa press democrat" the girl overdosed on the date rape drug ghb. now they initially thought she had died of alcohol poisoning during a july sleepover. detectives are not sure if she intentionally or accidentally ingested the drug. many of the ingredients in ghb are also contained in industrial cleaning solvents. a lawyer for her parents says the girls may have accidentally ingested the cleaning solvent thinking it was v
