we are still dealing with slick conditions for the east bay, the peninsula and the south bay. moving closer to discovery bay. and also through the altamonte pass it is is really coming down there. also for the south bay, a light shower moving through santa clara, is sunnyvale. santa cruz mountains, light rain moving in. as you step out the door, it is 49 degrees in the peninsula and the south bay. 44 in the north bay. we will see very heavy rain moving through in pockets, especially for the peninsula, over towards the bay. then the north bay will get in on heavy downpours as we go into the lunchtime hours. we will see that anywhere in the bay area. quick moving rain that may get more intense for 20, 30 minutes. then it gets a little bit lighter. but the bankrupt of the storm starts to hit us at 3:00 to 5:00. we will have wind blown rain and a very tricky evening commute. even at 9:30 tonight, we are seeing pockets of rain and wind dying down. we will still see rain moving through tomorrow. the second storm system early friday morning. we are expecting three storms to move throu

the kpix 5 hi-def doppler shows the action at the moment is concentrated mostly in the monterey bay area in the south end of the big sur coastline. up in the north bay and in the south bay, just scattered showers right now. a little bit around the kpix 5 hi-def doppler site up at mount vaca. but most of this is still offshore as you can see, this pineapple express tapping moisture from all the way north of the hawaiian islands, much of the moisture offshore will affect us overnight. intense rain and wind will develop shortly favoring the south bay to begin with. treacherous mountain travel, rivers rising through monday, widespread road flooding through tomorrow night. totals as much as 7" in the north bay and almost a foot of rain in the santa cruz mountains by the time all is said and done by monday night. and yet it is not all said and done by monday night. we have more on the way after this. we'll have the details when we cover the forecast in a few minutes. >>> let's get back to our live team coverage as people are gearing up for all the wind and rain. >> jackie ward is standing by live in san an

favoring the south bay. 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. widespread rain maybe some thunderstorms as well would not be a surprise. so no wonder flash flood watches are posted for most of the bay area. how is it affecting the rivers? the napa river in saint helena forecast to be above flood stage by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. but not really well above flood stage so the low-lying parts of the napa river by saint helena. at this moment it's not forecast to flood in napa. russian river guerneville will be above flood stage by 3 p.m. on monday. 35.5 feet. saw that about five years ago. that means low-lying businesses around 4th and 5th streets and mill street will flood and the residences out there will too by monday afternoon. rainfall past 24 hours not that impressive but that's because this is hasn't really hit the bay area yet. the most we have seen in san rafael up above it more. 60-mile-an-hour winds in mount diablo and sfo with a gust to 45. high wind alerts are posted, not a surprise. so intense rain and wind develops shortly. it

the east bay shoreline and along the peninsula as well. the north bay getting a little bit more later on. it's broken up quite a bit here in the south those models. you will see what we are talking about. this is -- this takes us to about 4:15. good coverage over the bay. in terms of heavier rain, and most notable in the south area. sometimes we don't see a lot of activity in the south bay but this moisture helping out, really making this a wet storm with all of that. it's cold enough to provide the mountains snow along with it as that starts to dip to the south particularly as you notice the trail of moisture. over the next couple days after today, will see those opportunities of showers tomorrow morning into the afternoon. there we see it starting to clear out as we get into thursday and into friday. the other factor is those wins. here are those wins headed out to your car. 20 mile-per-hour winds is our guest a mission's. they hang for several hours. the wind starts in earnest across the bay area mid afternoon, and it's here till midnight before it starts to subside as we go into the overnight hours. well beyond rain. mid-50s exp

the south bay getting the worst of it. >> in recent history. stay in if you can the drive is pretty treacherous. >> especially for the south bay. it is windy and cold. let's look at the radar now. some of the heaviest rain clearing san jose. but it was just there. it created puddles on the roadways. standing water. another wave moving in from the peninsula. as we get a closer look where the showers are now, you may have heard claps of thunder, flashes of lightning. that activity has since calmed down. we look at the heavy rainfall through los altos. evergreen, it is still pouring. you will be out here within the next few minutes. if you're following me on facebook and twitter, let me know how things are where you are. looking at the timeline of what else we're expecting as we go through the day. by 10:30, still spotty showers and possibly a few more thunderstorms in the forecast with some strong winds. 2:30, we're still seeing some rain coming down. and even the evening commute will be wet. until we start to the see a few more breaks in this act

the south bay getting slammed all the way through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. 1:00, the rain begins to push toward the north bay. as we head toward tomorrow night, finally the storm comes through and we begin to catch a bit of a break as we go through the day on monday. look at the rainfall projections. an odd color coating. we're not used to seeing this. when it changes, north bay. three to five inches of rain. these areas in gray and white would be five to seven inches of rain. in the santa cruz mountains. once it changes in the forecast, add go more rain into the hill top. morning looks like a mist. the rain falls the first half of the day. we'll see highs in the low to mid 60s. a gusty day. mild air. and you have rain in the 60s. it tells you what's happening off to the east in the sierra. snow levels close to 10,000 feet. more low 60s and upper 50s around the north bay. so that's the big storm. number one. as we watch the next system arriving. monday afternoon, a bit of a break. more wind and rain. not as much as we're seeing right now but

the rest of the bay calm except for the crash on the upper east shore. adding more slowing here at highway 4 than the bay bridge. >> we continue to follow breaking news out of the south bay. a 24-hour fitness parking lot in sunnyvale has now turned into a crime scene. and santa clara police officers have been out several hours. >> that's why we sent today in the bay kris sanchez to get information. any updates on what's going on out there? >> we have been on the phones trying to talk with the officers on the scene. finally it appears someone will give us more information in the next 10 minutes. we are expecting someone from the santa clara police department to provide some details on what happens here. the crime scene investigation unit has been moved over so our view is partially blocked. earlier the officers were examining things on the ground in the parking lot of 24-hour fitness. this is in sunnyvale. you might be thinking, sunnyvale? this is santa clara police. it's not unusual for officers to investigate crimes originating in their city but it is is unusual they are outside the city limits at this point. we can see in the video one officer appears to be looking

that's coming back towards the south bay. nbc bay area's damian joins us now near the scene with the very latest. damien. >> reporter: raj, we have an update. they are still looking for the robber. chp tells us the southbound lanes will reopen at about 6:30 this evening. the northbound lanes about two hours after that so at about 8:30. but the folks in the area have been told to shelter in place in the red wood estates area as police still look for the suspected bank robber. it happened just before noon over in scotts valley and they're still looking for that man. it started with that robbery at a bank of america in scotts valley this morning. we have surveillance picture of the suspect released by the sheriff's department. after the robbery scotts valley police started a chase along highway 17. there are reports the suspect hit several cars before his car finally broke down near red wood estates. at that point scotts valley police opened fire, but don't know whether they hit the suspect who ultimately disappeared into the woo

a dramatic sight in the south bay. this redwood tree comes crashing down on highway 17. they actually cut it down in hopes of avoiding more problems. robert, what's the status where you are? >> reporter: i think there are probably a lot of communeputers think this caused traffic tie-ups. big trees fall all the time during storms in the santa cruz mountains. they wanted to make sure these huge redwoods didn't come down at the wrong time on highway 17. the trees were on the fringe of a big mudslide that came rushing down on to the road at around 3:00 this morning. so the chp stopped traffic to get rid of the danger. you had a front row seat. >> how did we luck out? >> reporter: what did you think? it was cool. i'm glad we weren't on that side when that came down. >> reporter: what do you think when you see the mudslide? >> crazy. >> tree trump, wires, branchs, a lot of loose dirt, mud, gravel. there was a vehicle. the party was safely extracted. there's no major injuries reported from that incident. now the process is just cleanup begins. >> reporter: the chp says the mudsl

we do have a cold front that has pushed through the bay area and the north bay, but look at the heavy rain still in the south bay and santa cruz mountains and the central coast. the winds will continue to dial back as the front pushes through, but we already have flooding from sonoma, napa, and santa cruz and southeastern and alameda county and a flash flood watch throughout the afternoon. the surf is still up and the winds, it will be a couple hours before those settle down, and we still are going to look for showers today. here's a look at santa cruz where one of the more particularly hard hits areas today, the rain will continue here for the next several hours, and the golden gate, things looking calmer here, and the wet pavement headed out this morning, and a break for the next few hours before the rain comes back throughout the morning hours. the wet pavement, and the cold front and the good news is it's behind this, still a couple hours and a couple days of showers before we can eliminate the rain from a couple days in our outlook, and we will have that for you in our hour by hour sunday afternoon fore

it's been a busy day here in the south bay. crews have to close this road in san jose because of a live down power line, one of many in the city. in fact, the san jose fire department was so busy today they needed assistance from the fire department to answer calls like this one from santa clara. on hillsdale avenue, part of a tree rested on the roof of a home. >> i didn't want to do anything right now with the chain saw because it's too wet. i'm afraid i might get hurt or slip or something like that. >> reporter: down the street, good samaritans ran across hillsdale avenue to remove frauns from a palm tree that were creating a driving hazard. the heavy rains also forced this gentleman to stop by the sandbag center. >> just picking up sandbags to prevent water from getting into the entry way, front of our house is flooding, so it needed some sandbags. >> reporter: up springs, the river briskly flowed toward the bay, flooding the bike trail along the way. >> can you pull this? >> these people look forward to the rising waters are

also a break in the south bay. ll the streets are wet as a few drivers make their way out there on the roadways. in san francisco, still soggy as we have seen the heaviest rain moving through about two hours ago for the spot. it's still light spotty showers moving through. we were seeing the shift of the heaviest rain now moving to the east of the bay area and also farther off toward the south. let's get a close look at where we have seen the heaviest rain moving in in parts of the peninsula. you are seeing a steady downpour in palo alto. steady rain in san jose. we have had pockets of heavy rain. now we are seeing more shades of green on the map. not the reds and yellows showing the more intense rain. for the santa cruz mountains we are seeing some of the bright greens there. it shifts over to the morgan hill, gilroy area where it's still really coming down. i just retweeted a viewer who has had three-quarters of an inch of rain. thank you for that information. you can send us what the weather looks like where you

>> right, and we parked it on the mountain in san bruno to get the best view of the north bay all the way down to the south bay and over toward the east bay. we are scanning this with our mobile doppler radar truck and seeing what it looks like as the rain comes out of the clouds, and we're picking up a line of bright red and yellow showing the most intense rain moving through at this point. you see there, on the radar, it once again is picking up on the heaviest rain over san francisco and also just to the south of there, over toward parts of the north bay and extending into the east bay. fairfield right now also getting in on very heavy downpours. so we will continue to go around the bay area. also wanted to keep you up to date that both northbound and southbound 101 near windsor has been closed. we're seeing that there's some flooding there. cars in water, and is going to cause quite a few problems for folks getting out there on the road in the north bay. we'll have more on this and a closer look at where you live coming up a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> well, let's bring in today in the bay's pizza r

the bay area. at this point it's pretty much over the south bay, widespread over morgan hill and continuing south, rate downpours reported along highway 101. shifting closer in you'll find it at its heaviest. for the rest of us the scattered showers on and off, a little drizzle with gray skies is what we're seeing at this point. milpitas 88, a wet one -- 880, a wet one there, livermore towards 580 it's wet and towards altamont pass and antioch. levels are up in the sierra and it is winding down a bit. it will continue through the next take or so. the winter storm warning goes until 4:00 tomorrow morning for 2 to 4 feet of snow a possibility by the end of the weekend. your futurecast model will take you through sunday, early afternoon, a lot of the same, gray skies, pockets of rain, dry weather in between. by 3:00 or 4:00 another round is coming. sunday night it's lingering and scattered showers in the forecast for monday. the winds we're seeing anywhere from 5 to 10 to 15 miles per hour for most of our urban areas. in the hills and come along the coast line it's breezier. i'm seeing some winds gust

the other parts of the bay area. from american canyon road to crockett. we're seeing light spotty returns, and the same thing in the south bay, right around evergreen, eden veil across highway 101. today's storm did leave behind some damage. take a look at all the reports, we had 28 reports to be precise. debris flows, flooding, river. heavy rain, the river we're still watching is the russian river at gurnville. how much rain did your area get. >> san jose got 38/100 of an inch. well over 3 inches in the north bay. santa rosa, san rafael, 85/100 in san francisco. almost an inch, even places like livermore and concord picking up 7/10 to 8/10 of an inch of rain. this is good, in terms of our temperatures right now, they're in the 40s and 50s. we are seeing a little bit of lull in the activity in the sierra, the snow is starting to taper, we have a winter storm warning up until noon tomorrow, expecting 2 feet total, when all is said and done for the highest peaks. >> here's a look at the snow totals for the resorts. they're going to continue to fall in the overnight hours, if you're flying out of sfo. all flights are taking

san jose you have a good crowd in downtown but it is kind of chilly around the south bay. saratoga and willow glen, in the mid-30s. close to 41 degrees in downtown san jose and south san jose 38 degrees. you can see out in the tri-valley right now, 38 degrees. and the north bay, santa rosa down to 35 degrees with a little bit of patchy fog to start the day tomorrow morning. numbers close to what we're seeing right now is how we will start the day tomorrow. for afternoon highs, increasing clouds, numbers in the mid-50s in the south bay including in san jose with highs in the 54 degree range. pleasanton low 50s. and for the peninsula up toward san francisco by late afternoon may begin to see showers dropping out of the north bay, highs in the north 50s and chilly low 50s in santa rosa and sonoma. perhaps looking at snow levels down to about 2,000 feet as very chilly air drops down the coast. tomorrow will start off dry with increasing clouds. sunday evening you are beginning to see the showers around the santa cruz mountains and more so on monday. this is the window of opport

we've gotten the least amount of rainfall in the south bay. he storm impact scale ranks a 2 today, moderate storm, 2 out of 5. we've got the morning downpours and by this afternoon we'll have scattered showers, very windy conditions with 60-mile-per-hour gusts possible in the higher elevations. we're expecting anywhere from a quarter of an inch in parts of the south bay to an inch and a half in some of the heavier locations like the north bay. a wind advisory in effect until 1:00 this afternoon for the areas in yellow, all along the coast and parts of the east bay. winds from the south 20 to 30 miles per hour with 45-mile-per-hour gusts possible. so the concern here, downed trees and power outages, get ready for that. it will be even tougher tomorrow. it's higher in the upper elevations, so high wind warning there where gusts can reach up to 60 miles per hour. that's in effect, and this afternoon for some of the north bay mountains, and also the east bay hills, it continues through tomorrow morning. get ready for the big storm tomorrow. on our
