china sea is a big tangled mess of different countries in the region that are competing for control and claims to different parts of the south china sea. vietnam, malaysia, the philippines. what's very strange here is china claims water all the way down to here, to the shores of the philippines. and where this is really at stake right now is in an area called the spratly islands. just to give you a sense of what china is doing there, this was a reef in 2005 known as fiery cross. now look what's happened after ten years of chinese land reclamation. they've built an entire manmade island out of the ocean, put in an air strip as well. and one of the concerns that president obama raised with the southeastern asian summit leaders was to stop what he claims were disputed territories, particularly in these manmade islands. what the u.s. has been doing is sending warplanes, u.s. navy ships into these areas to challenge china's claim that it controls these areas. so that's ratcheting tensions up right now. china again insisting that it is building these islands to help with fishing and to help with emergency rescue as well. miguel? >

china sea. if you can explain what is the u.s. interest in the south china sea and how do you think that will play into this summit? >> the u.s. has two main interests in the south china sea. one is preserving freedom of navigation for itself and for others in the international waters of the south china sea. and the other is ensuring that all the disputes that are currently raging in the south china sea between china and other claimants and between some of the other claimants that don't have to do with china, that those disputes are all settled according to international law and that they are settled peaceably rather than through coercion. >> ann i want to get your take on what you think the significance of china is in this meeting. >> well, clearly, it's even though obama says it's not antichina, in a way the u.s. is in competition with china ore influence i -- over influence in that region. it is over china and china isn't invited to this meeting. and i would say that that is probably the big elephant in the room where the u.s. is going to try courts

show you the will contrast in how china is approaching the issue in the south china sea versus how theted states and other countries in the region are approaching the issue. many countries in the region want to take a diplomatic approach, one that upholds international law of the peaceful resolution of disputes. that was the top of the agenda when president obama met with the leaders a few days ago. china is trying to take unilateral steps to assert authority in the south china sea. the wishes of others to address the dispute in a diplomatic and peaceful way is falling on deaf ears in beijing. jane: secretary kerry says he will have serious talks with china, but they aren't listening. what else can the united states do? >> this is a long-term process. it will play out for the years ahead. what the united states is doing is trying to shape an environment in the region where it shows china that it is in their interest to live up to international law and resolve disputes peacefully. one thing we might see after today's revelations is continuing a down as corridor a cycle in the south chin
