we're going now to our diplomatic editor, nick robertson, outside the stade de france. what are you hearing, anything new? >> reporter: one of the questions being asked in the french media is the coordinated suicide bombing attacks at the stadium here. 80,000 people in the stadium. the french president, francois hollande, present. isis has said that they targeted this match because it was between two christian countries, between france and germany. they said they did it under the nose of president francois hollande. it's not clear if they knew he was going to be at the game. the question that's being asked here, there were three suicide attackers. they killed four people outside the stadium in their coordinated attacks. the question that people are asking is because of increased security, because of the presence of francois hollande, were they thwarted from getting into the densely packed crowd of 80,000 people? could the casualty toll have been much worse? what we do know is that at this, the main entrance here to the stadium, at about 20 past 9:00, the first attack on

the first set of attacks happened outside the stade de france. the national stadium of france which was hosting a game between france and germany. and you can actually hear an explosion going off. french officials say the attacks included one bombing and two suicide attacks. multiple gunman started to emerge with shooters opening fire on restaurants and cafevev the gunman started firing on a crowd and took hostages before detonating suicide belts as police closed in. the casualty numbers are staggering. the paris prosecutor is reporting upwards of 128 killed with 100 dead at the vatican alone and another 200 injured, making this the worst attack on french soil since world war ii and the first time they have ever attacked the country. french officials say eight attackers have been killed and right now no group has taken responsibility for the attack. france remains in a state of emergency as the president has deployed military around the city. and now, france is waking up to a new world today and let's talk about how these details are being shared.

authorities and i've seen diagrams and itineraries, that the person who blew himself up at the stade de france did have a syrian passport. that's what he showed when he came to greece. in greece, he was given additional documents that legalized his status as a refugee because he claimed to be a refugee. so he was given those documents. then his itinerary shows that he went to macedonia, serbia, croatia and then to italy and then somehow came here. there's been a lot of talk about the whole belgian connection. that's op the border. maybe he came in from belgium. again, to reiterate, the cadaver that was cleared up after blowing himself up, the finger of that cadaver matched the paperwork that the french say is attributed to him. that's how they know this was this person. they strongly believe, they say there's no doubt he was part of an organized ring of infill traitors into the refugee people coming over to greece by boat. and because his fingerprints were not in any known french data base. so he was somebody new to the french authorities. totally different to the french national who was one o

around about halftime of the game we filtered through a couple incidents in paris, the bombing outside of stade de france itself could have been an explosion and then it escalated to grenades were thrown in the close vicinity of stade de france. and then shooting and hostage taking in paris getting everybody's attention on social media. through mobile phones and such. and now we've come to the end of the game people are able to leave the stadium. the stadium's not in a state of lockdown, however there are a large number of supporters who come to the games on the pitch at present because they're not able to leave their area of the stadium and get to their cars or go to the train. so there are areas of the stadium -- on the pitch at present. it's still unclear. you know, the extent of the massacre tonight is around about maybe 30 people dead so far. but it's unclear exactly how bad the situation is to us in the stadium how bad the situation outside the stadium is right now. >> jonathan, is there any doubt that these were coordinated acts of terror? so far they're reluctant to officially confirm that, but w

at the stade de france a soccer match was interrupted by the sound of explosions and at least one suicide bomb. listen. the paris prosecutor's office says five suspected attackers had been neutralized, their language, not ours. the official claim of responsibility, no official claim of responsibility but isis is applauding the attacks online. residents of paris warned to stay indoors and the borders of france in an unprecedented move are closed tonight until further notice. joining me is jim bittermann in paris. what is the latest information you have? >> well, don, from the scene here, the emergency vehicles have left, mainly, and i think the scene around the bataclan, theater, is still being checked by police officers. we can't get too close to it. but we've been able to talk to a couple of people who have come out and passed by here as they have left, people that escaped. one was a guy named ruben paris a 30-year-old gentleman in the concert and he described the scene as absolute chaos. he said the gunman came in. he didn't hear them shout anything. he heard the sound of the gunfire. t

one, it's amazing that he was here in france in the shadow of the stade de france, the stadium attacked friday night. number two, it's amazing they pulled this off. they killed him within days of this attack. number three, and this may be the most important for us right now, what does this mean going forward for the battle against would-be terrorists here in paris? does it disrupt or slow down possible operations? >> i think it does disrupt. abaaoud was probably going to be part of second wave, another spectacular attack when all of the world's media was here in paris. they had very heavy weapons. this was the second team, it's almost certain at this point they were about to launch an attack, we've been told that by sources, officials. this is the worrying thing. this is part of a wider network. a half dozen belgium and french isis recruits, climbed up the hierarchy, many are now in raqqah, where they're training, fresh recruits coming in from belgium, france, other countries, giving them one or two weeks training and sending them back to launch attacks. this is laid out to me by intell

passport was found on the body of one of the suicide bombers who targeted the soccer stadium, the stade de francewhat do you make of that? >> it would certainly suggest they spent time in syria, but in truth, we'll find out they had very, very deep ties to france. the selection of the targets, the timing of this, it really showed an understanding of paris, of french culture of what was going to gain attention. i think we'll see ties back the syria or iraq, but even deeper ties to france which will be many of these guys' homeland. >> michael, there's nothing to say that a person couldn't have dual citizention, correct? the fact that we find a syrian passport doesn't exclusively say this person came from syria? >> that's right. i would be very, very surprised if any large number of these terrorists were syrian, came from syria. because i think it's that much more likely that the french authorities would have been aware of them and tracking them. i think these are probably people who lived in paris. may have gone to syria. may have communicated with syria or iraq, with isis, to get some training, to
