at some point law officers arrived on the scene from both the local police and the state police, local fo the state police, we know we have a serious issue here. it is not clear when in this process the gunman dies somewhere up in here. we know from lawmen that none of the officers fired a shot during this time. as you suggested a moment ago, wolf, that would suggest that somehow he shot himself at that point. but we do know that when these officers arrive at the school, they quickly sealed the entire school off and they spread into the school rapidly, locking down everything. making sure there's no other gunman. and frankly looking for those children who are hiding in there. and i know from past school shootings, this can be a very, very dangerous time simply because these officers are possibly looking for a gunman but they're suddenly walking past closets very opening and people are coming out and they walk past doorbayways and people emerge behind them. it's a very dangerous, tense time when officers have to be very professional and disciplined and make sure something awful beyond t

the state authorities. they're in charge here. the local police and the state police. federal agencies are assisting as asked by the state authorities, and there will probably be some federal issues here. if it turns out, as we've been told initially, that the person who did the shooting is living in connecticut -- was lig in connecticut, but had some connection to new jersey, so it still isn't clear why this particular school was -- did the gunman have some grievance about the school, what the reason is? that is still very unclear at this point. >> pete, when we talk about this kind of violence and about the fatalities, we also know that there have been injuries. we know of at least three people taken to the danbury hospital. do we know if some of those were among those that died in this, or are there others who are injured? >> i believe there are others who are injured, andrea, as you say, and the one thing i would emphasize here is that this is the single most difficult scenario for a school to defend itself from because the number of school shootings in america has

we're awaiting the connecticut state police, they're going to be speaking shortly, we're told. for a while. you see the microphones are all set up. we'll have live coverage once the connecticut state police show up there. >>> in the meantime, much of the attention in the news media has focused in on the mental health of adam lanza, the 20-year-old who committed this mass murder here at this elementary school in newtown. our chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta is joining us. sanjay, i want you to put in perspective. there have been these reports that adam lanza had autism. some people are jumping to conclusions inappropriately. give us some perspective on what this means. >> there are two important points here. first of all, when you talk about autism or anything on the autism spectrum. you're talking about a neural disorder. i think the terms do matter here. second of all, just this whole idea that it's linked with violence in some way and specifically preplanned violence, i think we can dispense with that. >> there's no evidence that autism would generate a mass murder

the with their children. police are on the ground inside the school searching room to room. connecticut state police have scheduled a news conference for 1:00 eastern. we are getting record of two news conferences within the hour. one from the danbury hospital and one from state police. wnbc's jonathan dietz joins us now. what is the latest? >> well, the latest is that at least one gunman is dead. there are some unconfirmed reports that there may, may have been, a second suspect, and that is why there is this enormous lockdown in and around the neighborhood. that, again, is unconfirmed. there were some reports about a van being found a few blocks from the scene, and that was being checked out. what we do know is that one gunman is dead, and that two .9 millimeter handguns were found at the school near him and it is unclear if he took his own life or if he was taken out by the responding police. newtown police, connecticut state police, the fbi, atf, among the many agencies responding to this scene, and we are told from hospital officials that at least three people have been transported there.

the principal. we're trying to confirm that. state police are staging an area about two miles from here where they will be doing a news conference to get out some official information. lieutenant paul vance will be the one leading that in the next 20 to 30 minutes. of course, we will be at that news conference, but right now over at the school parents just confused. we're hearing that. they're very tense. as we were showing up, a lot of parents walked out with their children, very young children, third, fourth graders. they were, of course, very emotional. a lot were crying. one parent telling us that his child told him that someone walked into the classroom and shot the teacher. that's just some of the information. we asked that parent how your child is doing. he was running up the street saying, i don't know at that the point. they're still trying to figure out that. there's just a lot of information that's coming out. again, the news conference will be happening about two miles from here. we have a crew there. we will be getting that info

the lanza home behind me and it's closed off by police. investigators are now suggesting that they are piecing together information leading to possible answers about how and dwlp happened. lieutenant paul vance of the connecticut statee saying that in his words, good evidence is being recovered but he did not go into detail. in terms of the weapons used, we do know that three weapons were recovered at the scene of the shooting near the suspect's body. there were two handguns and a semiautomatic rifle. cnn has been reporting that those gunses were purchased by his mother, nancy lanza. there's not much we do know about nancy lanza. we spoke to a neighbor earlier in the day, and she said that she knew her. but there was nothing out of the ordinary that she could see. >> she was like a normal anybody else in this neighborhood. you know, decorate the house and the house was always, you know, pristine and i mean, she was just like any other housewife. >> as for adam lanza, former classmates describe him as being a smart student, someone who was quiet. kept to himself. a neighbor who knew him in recent years described him as troubled. mary snow, cnn, newtown, connecticut. >> all right, mary, thank you very much. i want to

police received a 911 call for an emergency at the elementary school. newtown pd upon obtaining information as to the status of the situation contacted the connecticut state police and requested assistance from state police and surrounding police departments. on and off troopers responded to the school and with newtown police immediately upon arrival entered the school and began a complete, active shooter search of the building. that included checking every door, every crack, every crevice, every portion of that school. our main objective was to evacuate as quickly and as efficiently as possible any and all students and faculty in the school. the entire school was searched. that was accomplished, a staging area was set up, students and staff were put into that staging area. and soon there after the children were -- and staff were reunited with parents and loved ones. there were several fatalities at the scene. both students and staff.

finally, the state police complied. the doors were opened. democrats went into the house and the vote took place about 15 minutes ago. >> okay. this is a vote just in the house. when is the action going to be complete? when will the senate complete that? >> well, here in michigan there is a constitutional provision that requires bills to lay over for a period of five days. we are expecting a vote in the senate by next -- next week on tuesday, and so, you know there will probably be, you know some more activity throughout the weekend. the legislature has announced session days throughout the weekend, which is pretty uncommon here in michigan so this is not going to stop at least for the in connection few days. then from there, it will go on to the governor's desk where today he indicated he would sign this so-called right to work bill. >> when was aich was a surprise? >> the governor has been consists ent saying it was not on his agenda didn't think it was a prior to. he testified before a congressional panel this year saying he didn't think i

the state police, connecticut state police, just gave us an update. r those of the viewers weren't watching cnn live, tell us the main points that the police made. >> state police say that adam lanza shot and killed his mother, shooting her multiple times inside the house, that is in this neighborhood where i'm standing right now. police still have the street leading up to his house blocked off. you know, there hasn't been much activity since yesterday afternoon, up until about -- i would say a little over an hour ago, we watched about six police cars drive up several officials got out of their car, talked a built and then got back in the cars and drove off, we assume to adam lanza's house. we learned from state police, their focus was on this school. they found that four weapons were found at the school, three found in the classroom a shotgun was found in lanza's car that was parked outside the school. we also learned that lanza mostly used a semiautomatic weapon called a bushmaster inside the school to kill those 26 people inside the school. he had,

and the connecticut state police warned whoever has been using the social media to perpetrate misinformation, that they will be prosecuted for crimes in the state of connecticut and for federal crimes. again, we don't know specifically what he was referring to, but we do plan to look into it. this just happened. and he said that the crime scene outside the school has been processed and the cars that were part of this, the vehicles have all started to be returned to their owners and the inside of the crime scene is being worked on by authorities and the connecticut state police also said that they will not be releasing a timeline about the events that occurred during adam lanza's rampage. but something interesting that we heard this morning from the lieutenant governor malloy was that based on his understanding of the reconstruction of the crime scene inside one of the classroom, the gunman decided to take his own life as soon as he heard that authorities, who were also armed, were getting close. listen to this. >> we surmise that it was during the second classroom episode and he heard the re
