this is a book about the 1943 merger of the pittsburgh steelers in philadelphia eagles. the nfl was so short of players that they merge the steelers and eagles and they became known as the steagles. the receiver was blind in one eye. the center was death and one year. the running back had ulcers. the actually did much better than you might expect. how well did they do? the book is available in paperback. [laughter] after that book came out in 2006 i was still in west africa and still had plenty of free time on my hands the began fishing around for a book idea and i suspect like most writers and reporters i keep a folder marked, ideas. 99.9% of which are bad and that is probably a good word for it but everyone's while you find it jim. buried in there was a piece of pacer-- paper with the words truman road tip. back in 1998, at the time i was working at the public radio station in st. louis and i came to kansas city to do research for the 50th anniversary of the 1948 whistlestop campaign, and i went to the german library and in the basement of the library, i think they have

i was a rookie for the pittsburgh steelers, lasted two minutes, got cut and then went back and i got involved in a little theater group, in youngstown, the youngstown playhouse. i don't remember why or how. i think there was a girl i liked. and i was literally holding a spear and then cut to eventually i'm going to new york. i remember my dad, who was a laborer all of his life, he said you're going to do what? you just got cut pro football, now you're trying -- this is even longer odds. [laughter] >> i said, well, i can always come home. so anyway, i went to n yk. of course, i always loved movies. i was the kind of a guy, i would go to the movie when i was 12 years old and see it and then tell all my buddies in the neighborhood the movie. then they would go see it and say it wasn't that good. i would tell it better, i would embellish and everything. i was always a bit of a storyteller which lends itself to acting. i don't know why i just thought i could do it. tavis: it's been to your point, since the 1960's, but was there an abiding lesson that you took with you from the experience o

knew jack was coming to get out of his bed and as we went in the door, there he was, standing at attention, saluting jack murtha in a steeler's jersey. pennsylvania, how he loved that state, how he worked for it. how we will miss him here. he had a special way about him, as i've said, by dint of his knowledge, his courage, imagine the courage it took for jack murtha to come to our caucus, to come to the leader's office and tell me that day, we have to begin removing our troops from iraq. he went alone to the press to tell them that. it was like an earthquake. in terms of opinion. people who had questions about the war felt validated. people who respected jack began to question. one thing was for sure, he was respected by the military and when he spoke, they knew it was with no agenda except the national security of our country and the safety of our men and women in uniform. force protection. he was always talking about that. when we would travel to the war zones, whether it was the trucks or the better radios or whatever up-armored cars, body armor, you name it, as soon as he saw the need he came back and delivered. so when h

and i remember one of the nfl players actually from my -- the team i root for, the steelers, who wastalking about as a child he would cramp up during games. his coaches got really upset with him because he couldn't totally perform at his peak. they asked him what it was he was eating before the games. and they realized it was soda, candy. they switched him to bananas and energy drinks and now he's an nfl star. so that is a lesson, i think, for youngsters all across the country to learn from. >> there are high taxes on alcohol and tobacco products for health reasons. why aren't agriculture department nutritionists want higher taxes or soft drinks for health reasons? >> i think it's important to empower parents to allow them to make the right set of choices. i don't think we necessarily want to say under no circumstances and under no situation should we encourage treats that youngsters could have access to. i noticed today at the lunch we had cupcakes.
