we are also always trying to learn more about how students use the system. we did the transit effectiveness project which is a systems study in 2007 and 2008. i had the opportunity to do focus groups with students and really talk to them. we partnered with the youth commission so we had student facilitators so we trained the students and they had a dialogue and that was really interesting and we learned a lot about some of the challenges and opportunities of riding muni. we also were able to secure quite a bit of real estate on the 2013 youth vote survey to try to get a better noting what perceptions were on the system and how they were traveling. in know jt students in the school -- in general students gave muni high marks in terms of the on time performance, in terms of safety. some of the things that caught our attention when we ask them -- well, how many are planning ride as adults? and less than 50% answer yes and i think that is short term and being enamored with the automobile. we learn when kids develop habits young and ride transit young they carry i

one of the leaders working in the system every day. the current system is like a bus, where the driver is the program manager and he or she is responsible for getting that bus or that program to a certain place on time and on budget. yet, the bus is full of passengers and every passenger has their own steering wheel and their own brake. so that makes the driver's job pretty hard. and when the bus ends up in the ditch as too often happens, then all those passengers scatter away and climb on another bus. meanwhile, the driver is left there trying to figure out out how to get out of the ditch and back on the road. well, what we need to do is to eliminate those steering wheels and brakes and then we can hold that driver accountable for getting the bus where it needs to be on time and on budget. that's what i hope these proposals move us toward. so finally, let me just mention three other things. there's more to the proposal than i have outlined here in addition to the changes in law. we are going to make public this week a separate document

that actually caters to all of the pockets and instead of one system fitting all of the kids into? so i think we've all been working diligently how we make sure that our kids just have the same opportunities first of all across the board and when i look at the numbers from the snapshot of the jobs plus initiative it's been really heartening to see the neighborhoods that we're serving which i really appreciate and the diversity of the kids that we have been serving, and i have to say 7600 jobs that we counted just from january to summer and not even thinking about the jobs that we have collected along the way particular around seasonal jobs and those that stayed on permanently it's a tremendous opportunity for our young people and when we think about the businesses that have stepped up over the years -- i mean when we have the job fair and i am glad to see so many young people in the room and we want all of you to come down. we had starbucks and a champion with david chiu was there and hiring kids on the spot. he was interviewing them and they would go
