he ran across the tarmac and put on the ground in cuffs. just as our friend from fox sports was able to get on the tarm acto escape everything, bill rider, so was the gunman. he ran across the tarm acand put on the ground and cuffed. could he have gotten to the tarmac from the area before the screening stations? that would be a difficult task. i am not sure that that is how things work there and access before the screening in most airports. that is a matter of reporting later. it is one of the first questions. authorities are coming together here and trying to give an explanation of what it is they have seen. going back to tom blank, this is not going to be a quick process here, tom? >> no tis not a quick process. to the point you were making an airport or airline worker may have access to the tarm acas opposed to the passenger that would have to go through the screening checkpoint, but unfortunately we have an incident of this magnitude and there are going to be delays and rescreen all of the passengers. they will have to take the dogs dow

the different feeling was actually people who were stuck on planes on the tarmac. these are planes that landed after the shooting, and what i heard from a number of passengers is that they didn't get any information. they weren't getting any information from the pilot. they got the information from their phones and collectively as passengers try to remain calm. what we did definitely see is people were really trying to help each other out, pass babies around, share diapers but certainly, this is nothing they ever wanted to repeat again. >> and right now -- >> reporter: very, very much passengers trying to stay calm. >> right now what's the status of flights coming in and out of the airport? >> reporter: flights are starting to actually depart. i actually saw a plane take off in the air. as far as what it's like inside the airport behind me, anderson, it's a mess. if you're coming to lax, intend that sit going to be a very, very bad night. anywhere you travel in the western region, planes are completely out of position. it will be a long night for a lot of the differ

he said they have been putting people on buses, hundreds of people on the tarmac. he senses a house. they are taking people away from the scene of the shooting and he is on the other side of the terminal. the scene is a very surreal with announcements of departing flights still playing overhead at the terminal. he said at first he heard the gunfire and felt a new kind of fear. in never witnessed anything like this before. tweeting photos inside the terminal and if you check his twitter feet, it is relatively crowded. some security presence inside. the reception is very terrible so looking at someone at the airport, be patient, they are able to get tweets out but very little else. he said that after the initial burst of gunfire and hiding people started jumping over one another, jumping off shares, pushing each other. it was chaos and fear is how he is describing it via his tweets. he will try and join us on fox soon but fox sports on the scene, describing how the light and folded. cheryl: is it clear whether shooting happen? it was pass the security area? that is th

through security checkpoints and suddenly they are fleeing gunfire and they end up running onto the tarmac or into an authorized area is you know how do you even behind wheels of airplanes how does the airport then rescreen these people open up the airport back up once the process they're well currently i'm terminal two just a few hundred feet from channel three where the shooting had been just. a few hundred feet away there are hundreds of people waiting in terminal one waiting to be rescreened some of them had already gone through security and some of them had not however police are not letting them through the terminal or out of the airport they will all have to be rescreened but they're not being let. either into the airport or out of it no sort vehicle traffic is being allowed into the airport and that situation is not going to change anytime soon and there are still hundreds of police officers here both from the federal level and at the local level we've seen trucks full of canine bomb sniffing dogs so while the l.a.p.d. said that the major incident does appear to have been resolved

basically the tarmac required to take off is about twice as much as the tarmac required to land. in this case it is a tiny airport. jabara airport is basically seeing tiny business jets. out of the darkness is a 747 dream liner. they touch down, the pilots look around and they have to bring in a truck to turn this big thing around. fortunately by 1 o'clock they offloaded fuel to make it light enough that it could take off on a run way that is 6,000, when a plane like that needs 10,000 feet. >> these are professional pilots. surely they should have known better. what is going on here? >> what is crazy is in talking to pilots i discovered that it's easy to confuse a couple of run ways. basically there's two ways to get into a run way to make a landing. one is an instrument approach. this is like driving into your driveway via gps. when you divert your gps tells you you have gone the wrong way. the common way of coming in - those typically come in on a visual approach, a handshake between the airtraffic controller and the pilot. the they say, "you have got it." the pilot wings it, f
