the school district over a pay raise, oakland teachers have had enough and voted to go on strike. >> reporter: there were a lot of cheer, applause. this was an overwhelming yes from the teachers union. 95% of the vote was yes to authorize a vote. there was a huge turn out. 84% of the union members cast a ballot last week. teachers have been working without a contract for a year and a half and demanding a 12% raise over 3 years as well as smaller class sizes. the district says they want to pay teachers more but can't afford a higher bay pump because th -- pay bump because they are trying to avoid a deficit. the district says they have too many schools and not nuenough students. the district says it will have to cut ten of millions of dollars for other parts of the school system including the central office. >> everybody knows they deserve a raise and we want to give them a raise. it's matter of how much can we give. >> we expect to be on strike by the end of the month. if the school board won't act, we will act. >> reporter: in the union goes on strike later this month, the district will have to scramble to replace or do without 3,000 teachers, counselor, nurses, speechrkers. they a

the latest. will. happening today... teachers in oakland will strike for a third day. negotiations between the tachers union and the district broke down over the weekend. yesterday's negotiations lasted just one hour. the teachers union is holding out for a 12 percent pay raise over the next three years.. they're also calling for smaller class sizes. instead the district is offering a 7 percent retroactive raise plus a 1 and a half percent one-time bonus.. teachers strike continues today community groups have stepped forward to voice their support and offer somewhere for parents to bring their kids if they don't want to cross picket lines. one of those places is the taylor memorial methodist church in oakland. we spoke with pastor anthony jenkins about what they are doing.
