we all know that it's being driven by what the demographers are now referring to as "the urban tech." the social media companies, the high-tech companies, the creative workforces, who now want to live and work in urban environments, interact with their environments instead of work in suburban campuses that are fairly sterile and isolated. and that phenomenon has been going on to some time, but what really brought home some of the changes to me was a talk i heard earlier this week by alexa arena talking about the 5m project at 6th and mission, the conversion of the chronicle building and plant surrounding areas. and she talked about the design process as being one of going out to constituencies, potential constituencies, focus groups, listening to people, trying to find out what they were looking for in collaborative, interactive work environments. and bringing the city into those work environments, and the connection and the need for amenities like cultural amenities and the arts and food and all of those kinds of things. and so instead of it being design professionals and people in t

first and foremost, the tech tenants that we're dealing with are move stronger financially than the tenants that we saw in 2000. in 2000, the name of the game for these technology tenants was to go public and everybody was looking for an ipo as their exit. and given the focus on the ipo, they were all focused on market share, first and foremost, and almost everything else was irrelevant. today while the ipo market opens and closes, most of these companies are being managed as much to be acquired as they are to go public. and that means that there is a focus on the liabilities of the company, that there wasn't in '99 and 2000 and also the amount of capital is much more concentrated in a number of key vc firms and being doled out in smaller pieces. in late '90-2000, it spread through the vc community that wait a minute, everybody is going to run out of space. and the signal got sent to all of these boards that have you go to control real estate to be able to grow and we saw tenants taking three, four, five and in some cases eight or nine times their current foot print it in their new leasing

however, i'm not ready to write off the whole fourth quarter tech trade just yet. there have to be some technology companies with cheap stocks where the future actually looks brighter than the past. so we searched and we searched and then we search some more. when we finished searching, we came up with one. i saved it for speculation friday. the stock is radware, rdwr. we know that cyberstocks are sizzling. witness how palo alto networks, or how about sourcefire, another online security play that has been roaring all year. unlike its peers, radware is a real bargain. the stock got crushed after a quarter that many investors saw as disappointing at the end of july. even though it has rebounded some since then, it's still more than five points off its high. it sells for just 16.8 times earnings. 16.5% long-term growth rate. so it's not expected by any stretch of the imagination. frankly, i consider it cheap. one, it hasn't run too much. two, i think radware's future is looking a heck of a lot brighter than its past. radware is not the wrong kind of tech that is levere

among the top tech stocks today was semiconductor giant intel. it was the leading percentage gainer for the dow jones industrial average. shares were up 2.3%. even though overall trading volume was low, trading of intel stock was heavier than average. speculation is building apple may be getting close to introducing a new imac computer, which would include intel chips. today's leading tech gainer was s.a.i.c. it does a lot of government defense business. shares gained 3.4% to their highest price since early july. the company will split into two publicly traded firms, separating its government services businesses from engineering and health care. with the possibility for more economic stimulus from the fed, mining stocks took the lead in the materials sector. gold miners newmont mining and freeport mcmoran were both up more than 4%. this is newmont's highest price since mid-june. the odds of more federal reserve stimulus has helped gold. settling at $1,687.60 today. up almost 9% since mid-may. it's been a different story since mid-may for facebook.
