jenna: right now firefighters in the texas panhandle still struggle to go contain a massive wildfire.re than 100 homes destroyed since the fire erupted since yesterday afternoon. >> that's right. 700 residents in the texas panhandle had to leave their homes to flee a wildfire and one person reportedly died of a heart attack during the fire. that is according to the city manager of one of the areas affected. the touch inson county grass fire also reportedly destroyed as many as 100 homes. the fire began yesterday and was fuelled by high winds and dry conditions. emergency crews from 26 counties were battling the blaze. this morning it is about 75% contained. but it has burned more than 1,000 acres. highway 136 was shut down to all but emergency vehicles due to the blowing dust, smoke and soot. there were many power outages and witnesses say the area looks like a war zone. dozens of evacuees spent the night at a high school and others went to a local church and the cleanup is going to take a long time. jenna: thank you. jon: there is a new controversy in chicago as tens of thousands of

a wildfire destroyed 75 homes in the texas panhandle. cuate near lake meredith, north of amarillo. it is snowing hard in parts of the rockies. some parts of colorado and wyoming received more than a foot sunday. and the storms brought tornados to kansas missouri and nebraska. several nebraska towns were damaged. the tornado threat continues this morning. meteorologist megan glaros of cbs station wbbm is tracking conditions for us. megan, good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, it is this big clash of air masses that's really the problem. you have very warm and muggy air in advance of the cold front and bittery cold air with enough snow to really cause issues across parts of the west. as those air masses collide you get a risk of severe weather which extends from the great lakes all the way down to the mexican border. tornados, large hail damaging winds. we're talking about missouri up through illinois wisconsin and iowa. those storms rev up in the afternoon but we're also looking at new on the back side of the system and not a small am

a little too much rain in the texas panhandle. flooding problems there. much rain in the southwest. here is the warmer air. it's trying to push up from the south, but the front came through. that was the foe for severe weather yesterday. and the potential is there for severe weather later this afternoon and this evening. now we're getting rain right over this area which is under this drought, exceptional drought. the rain coming down pretty quickly. flash flooding will be a problem not only today but over the next two or three days. the moisture comes in from the gulf, and the low-pressure is stalled out over the southwest. focusing all of this rain over the same region. here it is, a bullseye right over that drought area. flash flooding will be a problem. there's a watch in effect and some flood advisories already in effect, but this will stay with us over the next three to four days as that storm sits over that one area. severe weather cleared out. calm day today. here is where we could see severe weather later today. north and south carolina, looking at

this is another area of extreme drought across the texas panhandle. we have too much rain coming down, right where it's needed. but this could lead to flash flooding. the forecast shows that over the next three days, the rain continues to come down, just a steady stream of moisture coming in from the gulf of mexico. bulls eye, 3-4 inches of rain over texas and kansas and nebraska. so the flood warnings and watches will continue to come in likely with all of the rain still in the forecast. a flash-flood watch for south texas. the radar, the clouds across the southeast, severe weather yesterday with the number of wind and hail reports coming in, wind damaged cars there in parts of pennsylvania. it's clear now, and the area of severe weather will be pushed a little farther south, along north and south carolina today, where the best threat of severe weather is. the warm and cool air boundary over north carolina, goes down from 79 to 71 in richmond, virginia. the rain across the southern means, but cooler air is moving in to where the storms were yesterday.
