i'm tehe deputy for planning with the transportation authority. i just wanted to add to the excellent presentation and acknowledge him as our main counterpart. thank you for agendizing this item. it is a wonderful opportunity to present the work we have been doing together cooperatively on an exciting project that will be pioneering efforts nationwide. they are the corner stones -- the cornerstones of the muni/tep network. in recognition of the importance and the excitement and enthusiasm around these projects, a few years ago, we did strike this mou to cooperatively deliver these projects. mta would assume responsibility for constructing the project, and together, we have been going to advocate for funding. the region has been so excited. the federal government has been so excited to support us, so that is really fantastic news. in both phases today, there has been strong partnership. i want to acknowledge the coordination with mr. haley's section, and together, i think we will be working through the issues that timothy manchin that remain -- the

earlier this year, colleagues, that we recommended and then we pursued an audit of the municipal transportation authority. with the guidance of commissioner campos, we initiated a two phase process of the mta transportatiotransporta. the first was by our own budget analyst and focused on compliance with state and federal regulation in identifying areas where there could be potential savings to the operating budget. that effort did identify some welcome opportunities, i think it would be fair to characterize those as marginal in terms of how much they could help with the structural deficit in our long-term concerns. when the phase was completed, we discussed the next steps. i proposed to move with a second phase, funded with proposition k dollars. there are opportunities to ensure through the capital program that the mta investment projects that result in better service for the people who take transit -- so we procured a second audit process with a firm, cgr. the auditors are here today. it's still very early in the process. we are not expecting findings. a number of board members, commissioners, have bee

we have been working closely with the transportation authority. we would specifically like to call out the deputy director of planning and the project manager for the two projects, co-project manager with our staff as well. i'm going to give you a quick overview of the regional funding authority, how we got to these projects, and i will go into some detail of the projects we are working on right now. just a quick background, in the late 1980's, there was a study that identified third street, tehe chinatown extension of rail, and geary and van ness avenue is for corridor projects. in 2002, there was a muni division for rapid transit, which identified these specific corridors. just recently, the 2008 tep identified geary, geneva, honeyway adn p -- and potrero as the highest priorities. prop b identified the highest priorities. in 2003, prop k identified geary and van ness as candidates for funding. in 2006, there was a regional transportation expansion policy, which identified van ness as a high candidate. at the end of 2008 -- the end of 2007/early
