i went with a set of ngo from the tucson area to the border patrol central office here in tucson with some of the policy leadership from d.c., border patrol d.c., because the ngos had been effective raising the issue of migrants having their possessions taken. 25% of all the migrants have gone through detention, have their possessions taken. 34% lose their identification cards which are critical for how they work and survive in mexico after they are deported. and so ngos in the tucson area and some of the national organizations have very effectively raised this as an issue for the border patrol, and the border patrol said, okay, let's take a look. this is an issue, where is it happening in our organization. and i was invited in to present our findings on this border-long survey of over a thousand people that have gone through the detention, deportation process and present our findings to document the level of which people have lost possessions. and in the process, the questions then were given to me why, why would we believe your data? here in tucson, we accepted the president's challenge to try to end veteran homelessness by 2015. programs have been going for seven months. we have housed 500 formerly homeless veterans. that comes about as a partnership between our city of tucson housing department, where we streamlined some processes to get folks in faster. also came about because of the veterans administration also focusing, and then we have in this community -- just happen to have a community that is very supportive of veterans. we have, one, very large veteran population, and, two, a social service structure that has been attempting to help the homeless population for a long time, but the bringing together of all those forces is helpful, about i will tell you, we can do a lot more with some focused private assistance. >> you can take your story and change the names tucson with new york and add a zero and we have a similar story. we have come very close to reducing the rate of veteran homelessness to zero, and that was done entirely by coordinated efforts with the federal authorities, mostly city, and private
