this is where the uc regents are meeting right now. you can see that you have some of the 14,000 nurses involved in the ongoing contract negotiations going on. they have been going on for some time. and today nurses will be at the meeting to voice some of the concerns they have. they are calling for increased workplace safety and what they say they also need is retirement security. because they say there are preposed cuts to their pension. i'm joined by randy howell. good morning to you. we're trying to stay dry out here. we have showers, you might be able to tell, moving through the area. you are out here nonetheless despite the weather. tell me about some of the issues that you are concerned about in these contract negotiations. >> yes. i'm on the ucsf bargaining team. we have been in bargaining now for eight months. we're out here showing solidarity around the state. we're having rallies all over the state to push back against the take away that's they have on the table, 60 of them. they're trying to erode our contract negotiations,

union says the uc is proposing cuts to the pensions of future nurses. >> we feel that when the ucakes away pension cuts, it hurts all of us. we are standing united. we are in it together. we don't sell out the future nurses coming into our bargaining unit. so we fight for our current and future nurses. >> reporter: now, this morning a representative from the university of california sent me a statement on these ongoing contract negotiations. here is part of it. it says the university of california is eager to finalize a comprehensive contract that recognizes the integral role our nurses play in patient care and their significant contributions to the university overall. uc is committed to market competitive wages, excellent health and retirement benefits, and safe working conditions for our 14,000 nurses. these cna nurses are supposed to be staging similar rallies and informational pickett lines throughout the day at various uc hospitals across california. we should reiterate here that these are simply informational picket lines. these are not strikes. all of the nurse that's took

the regents want more time to convince the governor to give the uc system more money. here's what's under consideration. >> reporter: the university of california regents had a heated discussion regarding the 2.7 tuition hike for in state students attending one of the uc campuses. this boils down to a $342 a year increase in student fees. a student's tuition would go up to $12,972 for the 2018-2019 academic year. >> it's easy for people to sit around a table and say that $342 is consequential. that is a big impact on the life of our student around the state of california. >> reporter: financial aid covers the full tuition bill for 60% of students. families with an income of $50,000 or less pay no tuition, out of state students are hit hider. they will see an increase of $978 more a year, that means they could be paying $28,992 in tuition and student fees. that's not including room and board. the system says it's necessary to increase fees because governor jerry brown says he will only allow a 3% funding in his proposed state budget. brown has said uc can do more to cut

happening today the uc president is pushing students to renew their daca status this as the bay area is bracing for a potentially major immigration sweep. pete suratos is live at uc berkeley with what this could mean for d.r.e.a.m.ers. morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning, marcus. the uc president, university of california president napolitano will hold that news conference later this morning in sacramento to discuss the renewal process for daca applications but this all comes on the heels of this report coming out of the san francisco chronicle of a potential massive sweep of undocumented workers throughout all of northern california. let's break down what's in that report. in the chronicle they are reporting that a source familiar with this operation says that agents are planning to arrest anywhere from 1,500 undocumented workers in the coming weeks. i.c.e. did not comment on this operation according to the chronicle but if this does happen it would mark the first wide ranging sweep since california gained sanctuary status in october. when it comes to those daca renewals request

happened shortly after 1:00 this afternoon atchaning way and fulton street just a couple blocks from the uc berkeley campus. kpix5's emily turner joins us now from the scene. emily? >> reporter: yeah, liz. i'm standing right next to that intersection. in fact, i'm going to hop out of the way and you can see what we're talking about. they're just now finally opening and fully opening this intersection where that accident happened earlier today. what you don't see are the cars involved. the white car in this video we shot earlier is a city of berkeley car and that car is the one that hit the 70-year- old woman who was walking in the crosswalk, that white prius. now you'll also see a big truck that essentially was cleaning out the manholes. it was parked in the middle of the intersection, so likely that line of sight had to do with why this happened because speed was not a factor and neither were drugs or alcohol. >> the driver of the vehicle had hit a pedestrian crossing a marked crosswalk. that victim was a 70-year-old white female from the city of berkeley. the driver of the vehicle stayed
