the heartworm. >> reporter: a vet at uc-davis says the worms enter the dog's bloodstream from the mosquito bite and then settle in their heart and just like west nile virus can affect humans differently, so too does heartworm attack each dog in different ways. >> there actually is a grading scale where we can have dogs that have no sign whatsoever of being infected with a heartworm, would you have absolutely no idea that they were sick until a test is done and double-checked and shown to be their heartworm-positive. on the other end of the spectrum dogs can die from it. >> reporter: roxy has begun the treatment to cure her of heartworm which involves deep injections of medicine at the base of her spine. here's the problem. not for roxy but for other dogs diagnosed with heartworm. about two weeks ago the supplier of the only drug approved by the fda to treat heartworm told vets it was temporarily not making it. it can't get the active ingredient. and it could be several months before it comes up with a solution. the good news for dog owners is heartworm is fairly easy to prevent. a monthly pill usua

scientists say the jewell of the sierra is not as clear as it used to be. a report out of uc davisds lake tahoe has reached its second lowest level of clarity in almost 50 years. back in 1968 you could see down to a depth of 102 feet. last year it was 65 feet. climate change may be a factor, according to experts. the report will be discussed at the 50th annual tahoe summitt next tuesday. we were up there at tahoe at different times recently, and the 65 feet, i don't know, i didn't measure it, but it's still gorgeous, spectacular, and you can see a long way down. >> when you figure it's only used a couple months out of the year and much of it is frozen or cold or snow packed. yeah, it looks gorgeous out there. upper 70s to low 80ths there. and looking at this mount you can see the higher scattered clouds. not much in the way of low clouds. take a look at golden gate. the fog and visibility reduced at the coast at about 4 miles. 6:23 sunrise, 8:05 is the sunset. and here's the roof where you see the scattering of clouds. changes today comes in the depth of the marine layer, strength

the following reason. so, doug miller is an economist at uc davis, and i wrote a paper published of her years ago when we lookt the long-term impact of head start on kids who were dating in the 300 poorest public schools in the united states in the 1960s. so these are like african-american kids in the mississippi delta, attending the lowest quality of public school that you can imagine. and we have seen the long-term head start benefits for those kids, despite the fact that they're going to such low-quality elementary schools. i think more plausible in my view it is a hypothesis that steve mentioned any science paper but he didn't talk about so much during his presentation, is the possibility of elementary schools over time might be getting better at alleviating school deficits among kids are not getting high quality preschool experiences. that is, the kids who are not in head start, the teacher then redirects time towards remediating the skill staff of the non-head start kids. some evidence that elementary schools might be getting overtime, particularly for the lowest achieving kids, comes from scores from t
