the front page of different protests. lots of them have used umbrellas and it has led to the protest being called the umbrella revolution. e guardian is very critical of beijing, saying the chinese cannot say that they were not warned. this is a crisis that could have easily been avoided come according to the guardian, which applauds the student demonstrators and their admirable commitment to democracy. their demands are not excessive, according to the guardian. these democratic forces are led by realists realize they need beijing. and speaking of beijing, i pulled out a very interesting article from the new york times today that points out that beijing is in a tricky situation. it has limited tools for dealing with the unrest in hong kong. the president needs to find a solution that on the one hand keeps hong kong stable, but that doesn't start copycat calls for change in mainland china. according to this article for now, his toolbox seems to be rather empty of instruments that could lead to a long-term solution. >> how are the papers in mainland china reacting to all of this? >> it's interesting to see the difference. c

it has been called the umbrella revolution. right now, the scene is generally peaceful. lot of young people out here. waiting. handing out food and drink, diligently recycling plastic bottles. no clashes with police. police have held back since yesterday. the occupy central group, the activist group demanding democracy in hong kong want protesters to stay at their location until the first of october. in hong kong, it is a national day holiday. it is a public holiday. there'll be a lot more people joining the protest. there have been more people joining protests in the evening after they finish work. it is expected they will see crowd swelled a lot more. wednesday is a public holiday. people are wearing black t-shirts with yellow ribbons. the occupy central leader has asked for the chief executive of hong kong to resign. a few hours ago, the chief executive spoke to reporters and asked occupy central to stop the rally immediately. retailers have been impacted by the closure of the roads and the inability for people to get through. the impact may not just be for three or f

so this has been dubbed informally the umbrella revolution. now what are these people protesting? ijing's definition of what universal suffrage is. there are elections in hong kong for the chief executive in 2017. hong kong has been working toward this. beijing recently said our proposal to you is true democracy. in 2017 each person can have one vote, but you must select one of three or four candidate that is are approved by us, beijing, and many of the people here in hong kong say that is not true democracy. now, wilfred, if you looked the faces in the crowd, many of them are young and teenagers in their early 20s. many are university students. in fact, many of these students have been boycotting classes for about a week now. i spoke with one person from the polytechnic university an hour ago and asked him, why you here? he said, i'm doing my responsibility to fight for democracy. i spoke to another university student and asked her what she wanted to tell presidethe presid she said to keep your promise of 50 years. she was referring to the promise china made to hong kong back duri
