it's riddled with inaccuracies ranging from the tactics to even the rank structure and the uniforms. touches on a broader issue that we're concerned about, which is that most americans for better or worse are going to understand war through movies. if you ask someone what they think about vietnam, they're going to think about "platoon," "full metal jacket," films that really define that experience. and when a film like "the hurt locker" is going to say we are the definitive iraq film, it's got to get the facts right. so i've been approached by countless veterans, especially the last weeks since my most recent piece was published that say they think this is wildly ridiculous. there are some parts of it that are really compelling. it represents the tension you feel on the ground well, but the exposure of the e.o.d. units, the way they approach combat situations and the wide array of kind of spectacular things they're involved involved with y not grounded in reality. >> brown: now, i want to explore this issue of accuracy in film and art. for one thing, ann, you told me you were at a sc

war in afghanistan and the bush administration's war of choice in iraq, the sacrifices made by our brave young men and women in uniform and the cost to our economic and national security, all of these costs are totally immeasurable. countless innocent civilians have lost their lives in afghanistan and just a few weeks ago the number of american troops killed in afghanistan rose to over 1,000. where does this end? where does it end? we've already given $1 trillion to the pentagon for the wars in iraq and afghanistan and the economic impact of these wars is estimated to be as much as $7 trillion in direct and indirect costs to the united states. it's our responsibility as members of congress to really develop a more effective u.s. foreign policy for the 21st century. after a decade of open-ended wars, you i encourage my colleagues to finally stand -- i encourage my colleagues to finally stand firm in their prerogative to determine -- the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman's time has expired. ms. lee: can i have an additional 10 seconds? prerogative to determine when the united states enters into war. thank you, mr. kuci

the gentleman from ohio, mr. bo cherry, one of only two members of this body who have actually deployed in our uniformed services in afghanistan. the speaker pro tempore: wonderful. the gentleman is recognized. mr. boccieri: as chairman berman had said, i was one of just a very handful of members that served in afghanistan and i remember serving on the ground there as i was deployed as a tactics officer. as a c-130 pilot they sent forward-deployed troops to make sure the troops got the right supplies and the missions we were doing safe and our crews would come home soon. i remember that day walking to the cao hall and had my nine-millimeter strapped to my side and there were soldiers gathered along the streets on other side and i peeked my head around and a humvee drove by with a flag on it and everyone was standing at perfect attention and i was asking somebody what that was and they said that was one of the soldiers who recently had been killed in action and he's on his journey back to the united states. and i began to think about that soldier. who were they, what branch of service were they in, how did they me

the military may not wanted. is that what you hear? >> uniform side. a judge -- judge advocate general from the start, i think if anything good has come of this, is the reputation of military attorneys and judge advocate. they were the one standing up and saying, do the right thing, applied the geneva conventions, treat these guys as pows, and it was the political appointees, big brains who have never won a uniform, who wanted to do a different route. the military kind of got years of -- got left holding the bag. >> ok, well, our time is out but i can't sum up everything but i think that the lack of leadership, and lack of an arctic and that mission, has really left many in the room feeling a little bit disappointed about the course of events. i think also the fact that i couldn't ask prosecutor to come up and talk care or a representative of the department justice because it is not their job to argue this case, makes it even harder to educate the american public about what is at stake. i hope you learned something. and i hope we see you next time. than
