there's been some miscues in some of the state of the union messages. president grover cleveland sent a very controversial proposal dealing with the tariff. in the days before we had an income tax the chief source of revenue in the country was the tariff. it was one of those things that divided parties and created great passions and unfortunately, for cleveland his party was not united on this issue. and, in fact, they lost the next election probably because of that division. and a lot of people blamed his state of the union message. but in most cases, most state of the union messages are really long laundry lists of things that the president wants to see done. and they're not particularly controversial speeches, nor are they particularly inspiring speeches. they're really wish lists the presidents are putting forward. when anything is done in congress, of course, the galleries are open. as long as there are galleries and there have bengalries in the senate since 1795 and in the house since 1789, the public can come in. but, of course, there aren't that

the president's state of the union address. ama tonight delivering his sixth such address, seventh if you count his speech to a joint session of congress in 2009. tonight's speech is notable for two reasons. this is the first time the president will be delivering his address to a congress totally controlled by republicans. with more republican members than at any time since before the great depression, and judging by past years, the president will not only be facing the largest number of republicans in almost a century, but will likely be giving his speech to the smallest television audience in recent history, an audience that has been shrinking since his first state of the union six years ago. not a lot at stake either when it comes to the president's approval numbers which have been under water for two years. on average, "gallup" approval rating has consistently fallen by 1% the week after his address. that's not much in such thing. so is that the public's state of the union fatigue or simply obama fatigue. the president doesn

speaker, the president addresses the union tonight. promising more government, more spending, and more taxes. obviously the president did not read the november memo from america, the majority of the union rejected the president's policies in the election of persistent big government. king george iii and the british imposed the stamp act 250 years ago this year. the colonists decried the new tax. higher taxes and more confiscation of property and wealth is not a sound solution. after all taxes are already too high. after all, revenue into the federal coffers are at a record level. after all americans are already hammered by obamacare taxes, and after all raising taxes is not a proven economic theory to grow the economy. we need less tax we should consider the fair tax that does not discriminate in taxation. the president should remember history and not follow the old failed policy of king george iii of more taxes. but should pivot the union to less taxation, less government, and more freedom for our citizens. and that's just the way it i

and frankly, should we change this prime time speech that is the state of the union. our panel to discuss. mack as someone who has worked with three different presidents talk to us about the importance of the state of the union and frankly, the best way to approach it and if it should be the way that it always is when you've got a lot of these plans leaked out sort of dead on arrival with the republican in control of both chambers. >> it's a rich tradition, and i don't think it should be changed nor will it be changed, but i think it has to be supplemented and augmented particularly in this age of such instant communication and i think that's what you're seeing the president do. he's already previewed some of it. he likely will go aggressively on the road after the speech but i still think it's a moment, and i think it gives him an opportunity, a unique opportunity to really frame the narrative of where he is in his administration where the country is and where he's trying to go and i think he's got a lot to talk about and i definitely think the state of the union is

[applause] >> that was president obama last night in the state of the union. y johnston, it seems to me that this was perhaps -- at least on the domestic front -- his most populist presentation in terms of on the spending front and at least on raising the issue of taxes. but what in reality, given the fact there is a republican majority, can he expect to happen in the coming year and also, what about this tax debate that will be occurring this year in congress? >> i think obama did something very savvy last night. he is trying to force the republicans into a position where the either have to go with mainstreet or the political rants. we've already seen from the response at they are siding with the plutocrats. the idea we should not just the tax rates for people at the top and doing so is somehow class warfare is absurd and of course, the republicans are always talking about dynamic economic activity and yet now they're proposing a constant state, at least as it applies to the rich. the proposals he put forth last night are pro-child, profamily, pro-work am a pr

the air. guest: i am assuming not a state of union? my favorite is president reagan's speech on the 40th anniversary of normandy. peggy noonan wrote it. it's my favorite speech of all time. it talks about the heroic journey of these workingmen who made it to the tops of the clips. i highly recommend it. i have used it to teach the importance of noble rhetoric. guest: that's one of -- a hard one to disagree with. the challenger speech at the president made, he had to delay the state of the union because it happened the day he was supposed to deliver the state of the union. my favorite speech is the eulogy that bob costas gave when mickey mantle died. i don't like the yankees very much. there was something about the way he captured what it meant to be a yankee fan and what it meant to be a mickey mantle fan as a boy in new york. i am a baseball ever. that speech to me was remarkable. the only speech i have ever memorized word for word was the gettysburg address. it is fewer than 300 words. it is a remarkable statement about what this coun

president obama taking center stage tonight for the state of the union. o be a lot of attention paid to the first lady and maybe more specifically the guests in the first lady's section. among them will be a 13-year-old chicago boy. his name is maalik bryant. you see him there. he's joining me now from the north lawn of the white house. hang with me because i want to share your story for a moment. you were invited to the state of the union after you wrote a letter to santa claus. his only request was for safety. he said i just want to be safe. president obama wrote back and in the letter response he said please know your security is a priority for me in everything i do as president. maalik thank you for being here. what was it like getting a response from the president to this letter that i don't even know if you knew was going to go to him? >> no i didn't know it was going to go to the president. i was excited, though when it came back when he wrote me back. >> so what, does it just pop up in your mailbox, and your mom hands it to you? >> yeah i was aslee

this is a state of the union experiment. the white house rolled out most of the news ahead of speech. they did that because they believe we're in a new media world. the president will be touching on broad themes of where the country has been and according to the sources familiar with the speech the president will offer a full throw of defense. that means going after terrorism. president will reiterate the u.s. will destroy isis. with the events unfolding in yemen, the white house believes the approach is working. mr. obama will ask them to back him up. he'll ask for a new vote to authorize force. here is a portion of that speech. he says tonight i call on this congress to show the world that we are united in this mission by passing a resolution to authorize the use of force against isis or isil as they say over here at the white house. we know he'll be making a case during the speech tonight for ending the embargo on cuba. they will threaten to veto any iran sanctions bill. as for domestic policy he's going to call for raisin

we saw the president's state of the union speech. ense that the recovery hasn't eached everyone in the -- reached everyone in the middle class yet. from your perspective, is that still true? >> reporter: i think it's absolutely true. good morning. people in davos at the world economic foreum waking up to the headlines about the president's state of the union address. many here were sleeping while he was giving the address. the president saying middle-class economics works. i think a lot of americans, as you see in our polling, show that they're feeling better but they're not feeling great. that is largely to do with what your last guest said. the fact that even though we have unemployment at 5.6% the lowest it has been in many years, even though those eight million jobs lost in the great recession have come back, wage growth is not where it needs to be. wage growth is barely keeping up with inflation. this means as things get more expensive for all of us across the united states people's wages aren't going up. also the hours they're w
