of 2012 and essentially paid off the debt that the corporation issued for the renovation of the union square plaza, we paid off that debt under a provision that allowed to us buy back that debt. that triggered a termination of the lease within 90 days. so with that, i am happy to answer any questions. >> would you go also and explain the second item? >> the second item is the sutter stockton garage lease with the uptown parking corporation. as a 10-year lease for $1 with two 5-year options to extend. it also has a termination clause for convenience with a 90-day notice. and as stated the sutter stockton garage totals 1865 spaces on 12 levels and generated gross revenue of $12.3 million and accommodates over a million transient parkers annually. the uptown parking corporation was originally formed in 1956 for the construction of the sutter stockton garage. in 2002, the corporation entered into a lease with the city to issue bonds for the construction or renovation of the union square plaza. totaling, i believe, $19 million. the mta issued bonds in july and paid off $15.9 million of that debt.

last year we received -- actually went out to bid for two stations, chinatown station and the union square market street station. the feedback we received from those particular bidder that provided bids and were considering bidding indicated that the price for the insurance that we required were again to be noticeably high, abnormally high. we verified that through our broker aon who said, yes, it looks like it was actually getting to be high. so, we've taken steps by asking aon what are the possibilities of trying to contain that cost. in doing that we came up with a method of providing a way of insurance that is above what we would require the contractor to still cover what we needed, which is $200 million. so, amendment number 2 actually provides $150 million and we'll be asking the station contractor to provide a $50 million contract. in doing this we essentially will rely on the contractors to provide their own insurance that they already have as a corporate policy so they don't have to seek that contract -- that additional insurance. whereas if they had to provide $200 million they h

recently we were approached by the union square business improvement district with their plan to beautify that plaza, totally upgrade it, you can hear the details from donna figurata, and they want to present the street artists in a more favorable means. what the bid is proposing is to create uniform street artist stalls or displays and these would bear the city logo on them, they would all have a uniform color, and the idea would be that they could be easily identifiable even across the street if you are coming out of the westfield complex. the art commission likes this idea, they have endorsed it, the bid is also willing to pay for these displays. it would be a voluntary program, okay, this is not coming out of the street artist money and it's totally voluntary. if the street artist doesn't want to do it, fine. but we want to give it, like, a one-year trial period to see how it would work out. also what i wanted to call your attention to is that by law the street artist displays are 3 feet deep this way by
