i am here to talk about the use of actuarial risk assessments in the post arrest criminal justice process by which i mean data-driven tools that are used to predict the future crime risk. these tools increasingly pervade almost every step of the criminal justice process from bale to sentencing to corrections, you will hear from other panelists about similar methods being used for predictive policing. my work is on sentencing and parole but many issues are similar across the board. and actuarial risk assessment is one that makes a prediction about the defendant's future crime risk on an out the rhythm grounded in empirical data about the recidivism rates of prior offenses that share the defendant's characteristics so some risk assessment instrument have been created by state corrections departments, the most popular ones are corporate products, formulas are proprietary which means we know about the variables that go into it but defendants don't get to know how their risks are calculated. what are the variables? the algorithms very, all of them contain variables related to criminal history.
