going out to the va is a roadblock. we continue to work well with the city. lots of different areas. we appreciate your support. thank you. >> we estimate in san francisco -- again, this is an estimate -- and the reason we are building this collaborative. there are anywhere between 30,000 and 60,000 living in san francisco. again, just estimates. we are trying to work through the technological challenges to connect people in a way where we can get a better sense of that community. one of the real leaders in helping us with that is leon winston, the coo of swords to plowshares. he deals with the challenges, acute and not so acute, every day. we talk about exporting models, swords to plowshares is certainly one of them. >> thank you. it is true, the amount of city support that we get. the resources that the va brings to the table in concert with that, with community-based organizations. i became homeless in the early 1990's, came to san francisco, and through court -- resources given to me by the city, of swords to plowshares, i was able to get back on my feet.

the va secretary says on average 18 veterans commit suicide each day. what is being done to help vets returning from the horrors waff cope? >> the statistics i think even -- of war cope? >> the statistics i think even underestimate the problem. we have poured in literally tens of billions of dollars for mental healthcare for our nation's veterans, both the newer ones and previous ones, but we are simply not doing enough. do you know that we do not give a full scale evaluation for either brain injury or ptsd before our veterans leave the service or leave the combat area? we give them a little two question questionnaire which they know if they want to get home quick, they check no on the questions, nor do we have sufficient outreach after they get home. we wait till they come to the va. then we may screen them for these issues, but we have not -- we do not put in sufficient resources. we do not do a mandatory evaluation before they leave and we do not do adequate followup. it has to be done for these veterans. >> if right now you'd give this an overall gra

before joining the va, dr. stone worked for several years over here at the university hospitals in the anxiety disorders program doing research in psychotherapy. next to her is ron who spent a year tour in vietnam, acting both as a platoon sergeant and a platoon leader in two different light infantry units. during the tour come here and four bronze stars for valor. upon returning to the state, he spent another 18 months in the company honor guard of the old guard and during the time, he participated in many funerals for fellow soldiers who died in vietnam. after military service, he found college life stifling. imagine that. so he went to work as an arborist, which became his career for 30 years. during these years, ron also studied martial arts, earning a fifth level black belt. so should problems arise of here -- [laughter] he also led the community and traveled extensively throughout the country by motorcycle, and he studied buddhism. as individual counseling as a grass worker. ron has read, written and thoug

this veteran the resource center has brought a lot of good things to veterans, such as the va right next door, the chance for veterans who do not feel comfortable going to a hospital, they feel comfortable at school, so we matched both of them. we are getting a lot of good turnaround. our mission also is to bring the veterans together in one home where we can have an easier transition from service to the higher education institutes. also, like the mayor said, we are trying to make sure all veterans coming to see the college are taken care of because it will be multiplying for time to come. the gi bill has been so great, making things happen, where today it can establish the economy -- to focus on the economy, giving veterans a chance to go to school by providing the highest gi bill assistance we have had so far. we had an increase of 1000 veterans since last semester. last semester we had 200 veterans. that is a good initiative. this is allowing more people to go to school. i am also here because a lot of veterans have problems bringing their issues to the va, problems with learning. but

what is the va doing to deal with the fact they have had multiple deployments, their families are facednges and we have more returning veterans who have been wounded? >> what we're doing at va is three thing, increasing va to all veterans, not just iraq and afghanistan wars but vietnam war and gulf war vets. we're increasing outreach to vets to end homelessness in five years and working as hard as we can to end this backlog we're tired of having to make sure we get our veterans into the system as quickly as possible. >> what, in particular, you have more than 1 million claims now pending. how do you deal with this backlog? why is the wait so long? >> what's happening is since fwou we've had an increase in 7 17% of veterans coming to va, applying to get into the va system. we've hired over 4,000 new claims processors. we're also working on some state of the art electronic medical records and partnership with d.o.d. so the transition from d.o.d. to va is as smooth as possible. our veterans can immediately begin accessing benefits like the g.i. bill. we have 400,000 veterans getting g.i. b

and i'm not here to bash the va, but i want to tell you just two stories real quickly. i happen to live not too far from fort lewis, one of the largest army post. i talk to these guys. i ride a motorcycle with 30, 40 old guys. i'm 62. the reason i do that as it gets that close to them to them and i can talk to them and listen to them and hear about their pain. it takes them three months to get into mental health in el paso after they're released military because all the talk is on there have left because the bureaucracy of having to fill a little chat marks. are you going to kill yourself? exactly what these people said. two weeks ago i had a 24-year-old marine who's been home for a year killed himself. he went to the va for mental health three times and didn't get it. and what i want to say as we've been in iraq for 10 years and we still haven't figured out there's mental health issues for these guys coming back? how long is it going to take? we're going to be in afghanistan long after i'm gone and we're still going to be discussing this. and when i came here i thought,
