then after about 13 months, got a phone call with the next levy for vietnam, and the last name they read off was papp, john d.. and that was me. and as much as i didn't want to go, i obviously ended up in vietnam. people have asked me what was the hardest thing for you when you found out. and, basically, it was telling my wife that i was going to vietnam. and i didn't know how to tell her. so i sat there one night writing a letter to a buddy telling him i just got orders for the jolly green jungle, and she decided to pick that moment to lean over my shoulder is and read the letter. she went flying out of the room, went to the bedroom, started crying, slammed the door and, well, eventually all of that became a good-bye and a promise to the come home. -- to come home. and, thank god, i came through with that promise. i went to vietnam, actually, i left the united states new year's eve, landed in nam on i new year's day as we crossed the international dateline, 1968. we wished each other a happy new year. and i was in nam for, basically, nine months. when we left the airport, we took the bu
