oakland police released surveillance of the man suspected of killing a passenger on a bart train at the west oakland station. ktvu's crime reporter henry lee is there tonight with the pictures and what police are saying. henry. >> reporter: well, frank, these are indeed surveillance pictures of the gunman that bart police say shot and killed a fellow passenger on board a bart train at the west oakland station on saturday night. now, this happened about 7:45 saturday as the train was headed to san francisco and was pulling into the west oakland bart station. witnesses say this man was dressed in a trench coat, boots, and blue jeans, and without warning fired numerous shots at a fellow passenger before disappearing through the train doors. i have learned that this suspect was seen earlier in the day at the pittsburgh bart station, and was last seen at the 99-cent store. we spoke to the chief who acknowledges there's a lot they still don't know about the case. they don't know what the victim, they don't know who the suspect, they have no idea what the motive is. here is what he had to say today

it happened as that train pulled into the west oakland bart station. allie rasmus is in oakland now. what's the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: bart spokespersons have not released any new information on the investigation into the shooting since yesterday. we are hoping to hear from them. in the meantime, things are back to normal at the west oakland bart station and they have been since yesterday morning with trains rolling through. it was obviously a very different situation on saturday night when all of this happened. police closed the station and had to interview passengers because of a shooting that happened on board a train near the stop. it was 8:00 saturday evening when a man opened fire on the train, shooting a passenger several times. once the train pulled in, the gunman got off the train, fled, and has not been found. he is still at large. terrified passengerrings and witnesses tried to help the wounded man. but the man died from his injuries. here's what witnesses observed moments before the shooting. >> the killer was purposeful i

police released these photos today of the suspect exiting the west oakland b.a.r.t. station after he shot and killed a fellow passenger onboard a plane saturday night. police say the man fired fired numerous shots. investigators still do not know who the victim is, and are asking for the public's help. police do not know if the men knew each other, and have not developed a motive. >> this is a pretty brazen act. we have a number of personnel assigned to patrol every couple of stations, along with, we have a special team funded by the government. that's responsible for safety and security. >> reporter: the department did not release these photos earlier, because they did not want to taint any statements by witnesses. sources say the suspect was spot the earlier that evening at the pittsburgh b.a.r.t. station. ktvu has also learned that the man was seen at the 99 cents store, directly across. the chief said there were no officers at the west oakland stations or on the train at the time of the killing. but officers arrived on seen, within 6 or 7 minutes afterward. b.a.r.
