will thomas is in west virginia for us. he has the latest now from west virginia. >> reporter: good morning. we are here on the scene about 0 miles south of charleston at the upper big branch mine. again, just outside of charleston. right now, we have the latest figures on the victims. the west virginia governor says 5 fatalities, four are unacted for and of the 5 dead, only seven have been identified so far. a large build-up of methane inside the mine triggered a huge explosion and this resulted again in 25 fatalities. now, as many as 40 rescuers went inside the mine to try to make rescues and four are unbeinged for. they pulled the rescuers out because of the large build-up of methane and carbon monoxide. the governor told me he does believe there could be a chamber near these four men that would allow them to breathe what they call clean air away from this methane. so that is the hope. they are telling families this is hope but rescuers are not inside right now and hire is further explanation on why they had to be pulled out. >> i'

brian is on the scene in west virginia. brian, what's happening now? >> reporter: wolf, the drill teams are furiously drilling holes in the mountain to vent out some of the dangerous gases, but right now they are confronted with a problem of more than one dangerous gas that is keeping the rescue teams at bay. we are going to get to that in a second. we'll show you where they are drilling. here's the status of the drilling operation. hope number one reached its destination. that seem has been reached on hole number one 1100 feet down. hole number two is going at the same location down to the first chamber around the area of hole number one, that's where they believe the four miners that are unaccounted for, they believe they are near this general area. they are going to try to get down there and possibly put cameras down there to see if there's any activity, any sign of life. a third hole is being drilled as we speak. fourth and fifth holes are planned. that's just to vent out the gases, so the rescue teams can go in there. they have about 8,000 feet to

she's live near the mine in naoma, west virginia. we heard the governor also mention possibly a seismic test somewhere around 11:30. what do you know about that test and what are they going to do? >> on the surface of the mine they will set off three shots or three small explosions. it is called a seismic test. the idea is it will send a signal deep into the mine. if those four missing miners are alive, they are trained to tap 10 times so they could hear them back up at the top of the mine. that would be a signal those miners are, in fact, still alive. we should note, they did not do a seismic test. but when they got that first bore hole through at 4:15 in the morning, got down 1,090 feet, better, faster than expected, they did not have any signs of life. officials say, look, there's still a sliver of hope we didn't hear or couldn't hear their banging or whatever it may be. they are hopeful, there's a sliver of hope they could find those four missing miners alive, even though, of course, the governor admits it was a horrific blast tha

the search today. governor joe mansion of west virginia says there's a shred of hope in finding the lost miners alive. inia. norah, what are the chances and tell us about the search for the miners that they believe to be still alive? >> reporter: well, the governor of this state, governor mansion, tells me the odds are long that those four miners who are still missing will be found alive. still, they are literally trying to move earth in order to try and rescue them. they've got crews up there bulldozing essentially an access road so they can drill 1,100 feet into the earth to essentially allow the relief of some gases that are explosive. they're worried about the methane gas and they're worried about carbon monoxide gas. we had been told earlier this morning that may take 12 hours. now we're being told it will be wednesday night. the process is slow going. you can imagine what it's like for family members knowing one of their loved ones may still be trapped more than 1,000 feet below in that mine. excruciating. the family members, we're told, have pulled together. a lot of them have spent a lot of tim

>> we have the west virginia investigation. there will be an investigation by the company, massey energy, there will be several congressional investigations, by the house, maybe the senate. and of course you have the investigation of the mine safety and health administration, the agency that is supposed to be overseeing the safety at the nation's coal mines. of course there's been a lot of criticism of the fact that the agency itself is essentially not only investigating the incident but investigating its own workers. this has been a concern of mine safety experts, other observers and lawmakers for quite some time that the agency doesn't have an effective independent investigator, an inspector general, to step in and look at the situation. the concern is you might have employees or colleagues not as willing to point the finger, at least as sharply as they would, if they weren't actually employed by the agency and looking into their own colleagues. >> ifill: ed, the question never changed, which is what should the national mine s

diane sawyer has the details from west virginia. >> reporter: 61 miners at the mine.ift change. half were nearly out, half were taking over, going in, when the blast happened. and this was an explosion so horrific it picked up steel railings from the track and twisted them like molten pretzels. there is a shaft nearly 6,000 feet and at the end of it, a prayer that there's a sealed chamber where the unaccounted miners still might be alive, might be breathing. but to get to them they must drill through 1,200 feet. the community prays all night and day for their safety. stanley stewart had just started his shift 300 feet down when suddenly it went dark. >> the power knocked. one of the guys stated, "hey, we lost power in here." at that time i felt a gush of wind. i said, this isn't right. then the gush of wind got really strong. >> how strong? >> in my opinion, and i'm not trying to exaggerate at all, but what was going through my mind was like a hurricane. it was full of debris, dust. my eyes filled with dust. i couldn't see. >> reporter: his wife didn't know. >> it was

jake, tell us what you are seeing. >> we are here on the ground in west virginia. the governor of west virginia should be briefing reporters here within the hour. it is very sad news out of here. so far we only heard of 25 dead and four missing. no survivors found. there are family members milling about here and there. everyone in the community seems to be sad about the developments. it seems to be a tight knit community. they are rolling out help. they will try to drill into the side of the mountain to get to where the miners are. the problem is, in order to do that they have to get to a certain spot in the woods. they have to cut through the woods and then bull down into the mine and hopefully find trapped miners. we are waiting to hear from the governor in this hour, and then around 7 a.m. we assume there will be more briefings starting to happen around here as the sun starts to rise here in west virginia. >> jake, were you there for the press conferences this evening? >> yes, i arrived for the one about 30 minutes ago. >> why the discrepancy? >> sorry? >> why th

so most of the mine rescue teams are down there at this point in west virginia. they have nine teams in the mine at this point. and they go to a certain area, there is a certain protocol that you follow once you get underground. but it is not like you walk in. you, of course, have to be suited up appropriately, go a certain amount, monitor the air quality and proceed from there. what we have found out and this is significant, is that the air quality is actually getting better, which is good because that indicates that there is not still a fire burning underground. >> right. i know that they do have testers to detect methane and oxygen and carbon monoxide and various poisonous gases before they go in. we are told that this was sparked by methane gas. do you know anything more about the explosion itself? >> reporter: i have hearding hed nothing on the cause. >> do you remember at the beginning of the night or yesterday afternoon, we were learning that seven individuals were killed. now that death toll has ris tone 12. but the seven, we were told, they were leaving i

as we come on the air tonight, we begin with breaking news. a mine disaster in west virginia. at least half a dozen miners confirmed dead. many more are missing. david muir has been taking in all the lateers reports. >> reporter: we just got off the phone with the west virginia state police. they confirm the explosion happened at the massey energy upper big branch mine. that is south of charleston. here are the numbers as they're coming into the associated press. x miners killed. 21 unaccounted for. just within the last couple of days, the top federal agency that looks into the mine safety in this country said more needed to be done since sago. the high tech equipment that was called for in these mines in case of accidents like these. now we have this. >> of course 12 people died at sogo four years ago. anything about the number of explosions. >> she says the first call in about half past 2:00. state police responded immediately. they are setting up tents. she couldn't confirm the number of explosions nor could she say whether or not six numbers were killed. the numbers are cha
