i want to turn to john carl at his post at the white house. offabout woo quiche r ajohn, ben the air you were telling me about some activity. >> it's not a gate to the white house, it's a vehicle barricade on 15th street and pennsylvania avenue. it's right in front of the treasury building. which as you know, sits right next to the white house. and as we understand, a vehicle ran into this barricade. and then there was a pursuit. we are told, unclear exactly how long the pursuit was. we're told it was a short pursuit. that vehicle is the one that ended up there on the capitol on the senate side on constitution avenue where you see all the activity and where the shots were fired. what we've been noticing here at the white house, first of all, the white house grounds are on a lockdown, which means we are not allowed to leave. nobody else is allowed to come onto the white house grounds. and we've seen capitol, secret service police cars and motorcycles going back and forth with their, with their lights on. but it looks like you know this is a prec

again, back to the white house. this is from the white house official. the president was briefed on the reports of gunfire on capitol hill. white house staff are in touch with law enforcement and monitoring the incident. questions about security post stir should be directed to the secret service. the secret service confirm it was this effort to get in on the 15th street gate, right by the treasury department, and this young woman apparently tried to get into the gate some way with her car, whether it was ramming the barricades that come up on 15th street. we don't have a depiction as of yet, but then this started a high-speed chase from the white house to capitol hill, that ended on second and constitution, and it's being described that she got out of the car and started firing. that where is we are. she is in custody according to two sources. >> trace: we have confirmed she is in custody and had a baby in the car. take us back on the you were the chief white house correspondent. if this car was to make it through the gates, what happens then? what is the

we began with this attempt to ram the gate at the white house. then the driver made her way -- and we believe it was a woman -- down to the capitol where the -- and it began when a female attempted to ram her car into the white house at 15th and e. she failed to breach security, was pursued by secret service, bailed out of her car near the capitol, and began shooting. she was then shot. there appears to have been a capitol hill police officer who was wound ed in that incident. we're already starting to get some political reaction from members of congress. as you might have heard before, i was talking to a capitol hill staffer who said he was trying to find out some information from the sergeant in arms office right in the middle of this lockdown and got an e-mail bounceback saying that the individual at the sergeant in arms was not at work because of the budget shutdown. so an indication that security may, or at least some people involved in capitol hill security, may, in fact, be impacted by what's going on. >> and we're going to go right to this

interesting to note, wolf, that the president's phone call to house speaker john boehner came shortly after the remarks from the house speaker earlier this morning. white house officials saying the president essentially told the speaker we are where we are right now, that the president is not going to negotiate larger issues like the budget or health care until this threat of a government shutdown and a debt default have been resolved. so that is where things stand right now. really no progress versus, you know, day seven, date eight is not that much different, wolf, at this point, but the president is going to be taking questions in the briefing room at the white house in less than an hour or now or at least scheduled to do so. and it is important to note that this is basically the president's first press conference of this shutdown and so he'll be taking questions and one of those questions will likely be what house speaker john boehner said earlier this morning, that he just wants to sit down, that he just wants to negotiate, that there has never been a president who hasn't negotiated over a debt ceiling. i imagine that those will be some of the que

house republicans, as well. so at this point, that is the question of the day. does the white house say, okay, let's do the debt ceiling deal now and we'll work on a continuing resolution to reopen the government later? at this point, what we're hearing from white house officials, suzanne and michael, the main requirement here is that it is a clean debt ceiling deal it doesn't have any other partisan strings attached, doesn't deal with obama care, doesn't try to bring in other issues, and once that is out of the way they can start hammering out some compromise on a continuing resolution to reopen the government. however, let's make this very clear, the white house wants a clean, continuing resolution to reopen the government as well. so that may be the sticking point as we move forward. you mentioned that the house republicans are going to be here later on this afternoon. my guess is and my sense is, from talking to various sources at white house and up on capitol hill, that is where the next i guess confrontation may lie. once they get the debt ceiling out of the way, it's re

correspondent jim acosta is over at the white house. dana, first to you. what are you hearing about what the house republicans at this meeting with the president under way right now, including the speaker, john boehner, what's the message they are trying to convey to the president? >> reporter: i talked to several house republicans sources before heading over to the white house. they told me first and foremost they want to get a guarantee from the president that he would actually support and ultimately sign what they want to pass, which is a short-term deal about six weeks to raise the debt ceiling, and in that time, they would use -- they would negotiate on bigger questions about the debt and deficit. the reason why they want to get that guarantee is because they don't want to put this on the house floor as soon as tomorrow and have their republican members, particularly conservatives who are not thrilled with this, what is effectively a clean bill, to do it for what one source called recreational purposes if it's not going to go anywhe

so i was in the white house. a lot of our senior people were gone travelling with the president who was promoting an education initiative that we had -- that we had thought would be the central piece of the early part of his presidency was a major piece of the federal education reform. so i ran the senior staff meeting on the morning of september 11. and it was a -- it was a relaxed and peaceful moment in a presidency that had been fairly turbulent on the way in. because of the controversy over the election. and had a lot of activity in the -- in the early months of the presidency. because of the recession that was coming in and disputes over political -- political disputes over taxes and so on. but i remember the morning of september 11 as a fairly relaxed day because people were getting back from holiday. congress was just beginning to get back into session. things at the time seemed pretty good with the world. >> so? what happened at that moment when you found out? and how did you find out if the plane had gone

leadership arriving at the white house. what happens? we're getting small reports saying the white house may not be interested in doing a deal. then we have other one saying there might be something do you think there's any deal that's going to get down here? >> unfortunately, eric, i don't, and here's why. remember the president initially asked for all of the republicans to come to the white house. why? because he waned an opportunity -- wanted an opportunity to charm or scare part of the republicans to voting with the democrats to do what the democrats wanted to do. but to speaker boehner's credit, he said, i'll bring a contingent. let's talk. because what boehner is doing is keeping the republicans together and what obama wanted to do was to divide and conquer. i also believe that that's what harry reid meant when he said, we got your back, don't screw it up. they believe that they are winning, and if they can divide the republicans, they can get everything they want in -- without any spending restraints from the republicans. >> we sen

in washington you see the mess that's unfolding by the hour with the house and the senate and the white try to get us out of this and it's playing out by the hour. in new york the titans of wall street are incredulous that we're even that close again. you mentioned so far the market so far has been pretty stable and i think that's because in new york the thinking is we've seen it play before but this time it might be different as the president warned and when the markets open on monday you might see the freaking out as you mentioned. >> why did you say that the titans are incredulous that this is going on? >> because we're a few days away from a potential default and the way that wall street looks at it there are outside forces that the market has to respond to that makes it difficult to reat. but in this case it's a self-imposed problem, the congress and the white house unable to reach a deal about paying their bills and that could mean the end of credit, it could mean the stock market plunging and people unable to see that the values of their homes or 401(k)s is anywhere close to bein

he's getting ready for his daily briefing there in the white house. ne there we'll have live coverage of that. this is clearly a critical day, gloria borger still here. gloria, dana was reporting earlier that the republicans in the house, and that's the key issue right now, the house of representatives. senate, i think, are going to go along with what the house decides, senate republicans, and democratic majority in the senate. the house republicans, will they put something up for a vote? apparently they're going to put something up for a vote maybe as early as today to raise the debt ceiling but not meet immediatelm with the government shutdown. how will that play? >> it's not going to play well because the president wants to deal with the government shutdown. he said no negotiations on anything until you deal with the government shutdown. we don't know what strings might be attached. there's all kinds of reporting out there but we haven't seen an actual list of strings that might be at tamped. and the president has said he doesn't -- he doesn't want

but for awhile the white house was locked down outside on the pennsylvania avenue side. but that has now been lifted. they seem to regard the incident as over around the white house. >> bill, thank you. want to return now to bob orr. bob, what have you learned? >> well, building on what bill said, i think the incident is over now. it's pretty clear a number of agencies still have people in the field and they're waiting for final reports, but all the posture of officers tells us whatever played out has run its course. we're still trying to get information as to the condition of the person who was shot apparently by a police officer at the end of this pursuit. one person telling me it looked to be a serious injury. i don't want to take it beyond that. we also don't know the extent of the injuries of the officer that may have been hit by the car. in some way was injured during this melee on the hill. it will take some time to come back to normal. we have security people in place, that yellow police tape all over the city from the white house up to the capitol. so as they unw
