to credential white house reporters. >> tell us about the history of the white house correspondents associationdinner. >> it started in 1921. it started as a dinner with the white house staff and the reporters. . calvinmaller then coolidge was the first president to come. we have had every president come since then. not every year. dinner has, this grown exponentially in size. about 2600 people now. obviously, our main celebrity is the president of the united states. for a kind and gracious. he has come every year since 1981. >> how has the dinner changed and evolved over the years? >> well, a number of ways. there's no smoking at the dinner. i was just talking to three or four of the most senior waiters at the hilton. they're been waiting at the head table for about 40 or 45 years. i asked them the same thing. one of the key things is, there is no smoking, drinking has changed. reporters used to drink many bottles of scotch, whiskey at every table. now there is a lot less tricking, more wine, and as the waiters tell me, a lot of fruit flavored drinks. we have hollywood celebrities. we have had

any response about that from the white house today? >> well the white house believes it is a significant effect, and the ruble in the stock market has been impacted and they have gone up a little bit since the sanctions were put into place, but the white house is insistent, and a lot of the economists are saying there has been an effect which is from the uncertainty that exists, and right now, the potential for the future sanctions going forward and that is so critical in this and key to all of this is what president obama said, and i was traveling with him, when he was in asia last week, and he said that the xiangs are going to be more effective if with we are more unified, and that is clearly the primary focus over the course of the conversations today. >> all right. ambassador hollyday, we are getting new information that the u.n. security council is going to have a formal meeting on ukraine at noon eastern today, and what is happening as all of the key players are really trying to figure out some kind of a solution here? >> well, i

i think the white house made a communications mistake in this. i think they should have paired -- the picture she took with bring back our girls with some sort of policy statements declaring why we have a national interest here and why we should do something. i think they missed an tun, so again the cart was before the horse and everybody started making fun of the hash tag. not everybody but some. it's the nigerians that are -- as a government, that is the incompetent here. not the united states. the nigerians are incapable of helping themselves and they also we find out today refused help from the brits three days after the giferl were taken. i do think we have a national interest. i think we have one in the immediate term to try to bring them back. however, we have to decide if we are going to help these governments get up to speed. i think we get whipsawed by these events and the white house would be better served by giving a full on speech to explain where we were on the war on terror. it's not one we asked for but one we can win. >> having so
