i started working the white house, my white house sources. nd trying to find out what stage they were in. at first, i remember a very high up source in the national security council telling me that something was percolating. and that was about two months before the release. it is interesting where this happened. i will say that one of the things that we are getting away from -- the networks, some magazines and newspapers -- we are getting away from traveling with the president all of the time. we keep pushing back to our bosses about, at least at the network level, that there may not be a huge story that we are breaking when we are with the president, but we have unusual access to the people who normally do not return your calls when you're in washington. when you are in china, or in burma, or in hawaii for two weeks with the president, there is a lot of time to talk informally with people who are your sources. it was on one of these trips that a very high up person told me -- before the end of the year. we focused on that. all of this time, w

it's not the white house way. in the white house, and you need to adapt to the new family. that takes a while. i think the residence staff does it better because they've been through it before than the families do. these are people who worked for the previous president. now you're working for me. how are you going to respond? how do i respond to you? and we know in the residence staff when that's taken place because usually when you walk into the room when there's a conversation going on amongst family members or staff members with the president in the residence or the first lady, conversation stops. they don't know whether you're going to hold the information that you overhear or not because we're behind the screen that the secret service puts up for security. we go past that. we're with the family all the time. so the family initially is very reluctant to speak out openly. at some point, two weeks, six months a year, conversation continues when you walk into the room. there's a collective ah we've made it, that g
