we work closely with the whole city family. i feel the day was a success. we have people at the city emergency operation center; we had the department operations center open, a lot of planning, all the city agencies, came together to make the day success. we open the subway early and ran extra buses to get participants to the start of the race; we were part of the regional security plan that covered all of downtown including underground stations. we had our pcos and service supervisors deployed to key locations that we could manage traffic on the street and make adjustments on the fly as needed. we get everybody to the race and back using 75 extra buses and extra rail service; we had very little in the way of problems during the day. we always learn things from these events. some small adjustments were made but overall it was a successful day not just for transportation that for the whole city. the event went rather well. finally the last item i was going to note, director heinicke noted, the 2013 biennial report to measure residents opinion on city service

the system. we don't have enough vehicles to accommodate this influx of transit users. it's important to free up munis to ensure they are serving the city as a whole. right now munis doesn't have any spare light rail vehicles. if they need to be concentrated in a certain area for an event, that means we don't have enough for the rest of the city and as you know colleagues, munis has $2.2 billion in deferred maintenance and 404 is on the vehicles alone. we don't want the transportation to slow to a crawl because we have an event going on. we should be accommodating an event. i asked for a study for the variety of the fee between $1-3 surcharge for concert venues and also to consider venues with 5,000 seats or more or 1,000 seats or more. a preliminary analysis has identified that this potential fee range would generate somewhere between $3 million on the low and and $2 million on the high end. it could purchase four brand new lrv's each year or rehabilitative 16 broken down lrv which will extend their life. munis as the subway is at a breaking point right now. the system is not meeting the needs of 2013 san francisco and with a significant increase

that's why we thought it would be best for the whole city to make this project happen because of the the state of california that require that seismic upgrade of our health institutions, because of the tremendous pressure to improve san francisco and bay area and the economical structures that face this hospital and so many other hospitals. the job is never done. this is an announcement of where we are today, but we have to get this thing built, we have to make sure it's furnished like we are working on to make sure everything happens at a time when there is economic pressure and institutions coming from national decision that don't necessarily compliment the economic recovery that we are experiencing in the bay area. so, i want to put this into perspective for one great acknowledgment that i want to make is that this was not easy to do. lou's assignment here and i don't know why he took this up because it really accounted for hundreds of hours of his time to keep everybody at the table , but it is an acknowledgment that i want to make to thank the board president chu, and supervisor
