in a popular neighborhood on the west side of new york city. this surveillance video inside a fitness center shows the blast just after 8:30. glass shatters. >> 6-1-5 there's an explosion. pail. >> we do want to be very clear -- the early indications, initial indications that this was an intentional act. >> reporter: officials say the bomb appears to have been placed in a tool box next to the construction trash container. in one video, a man seen is crossing the street in the vicinity of where the object was left. >> the ground shook and like windows shook this big flash of light. >> reporter: yet incredibly no one was killed. >> there were 29 injuries here. one considered serious. 24 of these people have been transported to area hospitals with various degrees of scrapes and abrasions from glass and metal. >> reporter: then two hours later, and just four blocks away, police discovered a second device. in what appears to be a pressure bag with wiring and a cell phone attached. the nypd bomb squad removed the device as bomb-sniffing dogs searched

it stopped people on the streets of new york city. under the constitution, you can only stop people if you have a reasonable articulable suspicion for stopping someone that they might have done so practice was essentially a 10 year walking constitutional violation in which over 87% of the people stopped or african-american and latino. 90% of the people they stopped didn't get a ticket or did nothing wrong. a stop to being innocent people on the basis of race. and that was looking at a large number of people, more than 4 million people between 2004 in 2012. that 90% number, people that didn't get a ticket, didn't get arrested, nothing happen to them at all. they were essentially innocent of anything? i remember the mayor saying there was a value in instituting fear in the community that they would be stopped. he said it would encourage people not to carry a weapon with them. is that a fair argument? reasons. number one, a mayor should not intimidate an entire community because they are afraid the police are going to stop and frisk them.

the path train to come in and out of the city to place these bombs. they were on heightened alert. heightened alert all over the city. new york city is up and running. nd my personal experience today has been a bunch of nothing. the m train and f train that i used to get to work are slow and imperfect and they got me here slowly and imperfectly just as i expected. so the city is normal, in the midst of what is clearly chaos but that is tribute to new yorkers up and down and across all the borders, boroughs and certainly our friends and neighbors over in new jersey. this thing is on track. new york city can handle this, if you see something, say something works. and we are not afraid. was not one bit afraid to get in that subway system this morning. got so many calls and letters, calls and emails from friends who know i live in that neighborhood, who know, who called on saturday, thankfully i was watching rebels playing football. saying are you okay, are you okay? are you afraid? no, i am not afraid. i don't know anyone who is afraid. not one employee of dozens and dozens i work with, frankly live in new jersey, who use the same subway lines and tunne

what is the latest thinking on the possible connection with those devices and new york city ones? >> the first thing we heard is governor andrew cuomo saying the devices used in new jersey and new york appeared to be similar. however, we're not exactly sure if they are connected. on saturday morning about 12 hours before the explosion in manhattan, there was the incident in new jersey and seaside park with a charity run. three pipe bombs found. one detonated in a garbage can. both of these incidents used cell phones as timing devices. of course, that could be just a result of you can go online and find out how to make these things. that might be a common thread. at this point, the cell phone was used as a timing device. all part of the massive investigation that is now spanning two states and multiple locations. >> a lot going on. jessica schneider, thank you. i know you are heading out shortly. >> seaside park and now elizabeth, new jersey. the duffel bag. there was another attack this weekend. isis claiming responsibility for a multiple stabbing attack at a minnesota mall. the at
