our thelma gutierrez is following the case from washington state. man and what they found inside of his home? >> reporter: suzanne, i want to show you what's going on right behind me. just a few minutes ago investigators with the fire marshall's office arrived here at josh powell's home. they are combing through the rubble. they will be looking at how this fire started. all along they had suspected that an accelerant was used because of how quickly this fire spread, how hot it burned and the fact is that they couldn't get in. once this explosion happened, into this house were several hours because they felt that this home was not structurally sound and when they did go in, when firefighters did go in they found the bodies of the two boys and an adult there in one room in the middle of the room where they all died together. suzanne? >> now, thelma, we understand that before these boys perished there were reports that they were starting to actually remember and talk about their mother's disappearance. what kind of details do you have about that? >> re

. >> our thelma gutierrez is live in pierce county, washington. layers to this story, thelma. two years ago the woman going missing. her husband saying i was just out camping at midnight in 20 degrees in a snowstorm with my toddler boys. nothing passed the smell test in this case, and yet police never arrested him. it's been two years of suspicion under which this man has been living and now this. do police feel like they are anywhere close to at least closing the case against susan or is this opening up a whole new kettle of fish? >> reporter: ashleigh, they say they want to close that criminal case and what has happened in the last 24 hours is that the detectives who have been working on this case since susan powell disappeared back in utah in 2009 have actually traveled to washington. they will be meeting with detectives here. they're going to hold a strategy session to try to figure out how to close this case and to compare notes to see what they can discover as to why she went disappearing and they say that this is an active case. so this is

. >> thelma gutierrez has been following the story from the beginning. ore can you tell us about this voicemail? >> reporter: i can say that with everything that we know now about this terrible crime, it is a chilling voice message. it was left by josh powell. he sent it to family members shortly before this explosion. he also sent a text message to his attorney shortly before the explosion saying "i'm sorry, good-bye." and investigators say that this is evidence that josh powell had planned this terrible crime for a long time. in fact, if you take a look behind me, you can see what's left this house. inside, investigators found two five-gallon gas cans that he had used to burn down this home. also in the days leading up to the crime, he gave away the children's toys. donated them. and he made calls to his pastor and his friends, and he spelled out directives saying what to do with his money and what to do after his death. >> and you actually talked with family members that are speaking out about this tragedy. what -- what did they tell you, thelma? >> re

. >> we turn now to thelma gutierrez who is live from washington. so many questions about this incredibly layered story, but just for start, where does the investigation go from here or is it over now that josh powell is dead. >> there are so many unanswered questions. that investigation continues on, as you said, to try to figure out exactly what happened. did this man have this plan for a while. there are so many questions that people want to know, especially in this area. this home was about 100 feet behind me, you can see the police car, behind me. it has been reduced to ashes. now this was an unspeakable tragedy. two children, seven years old, charlie. five year old brayden powell brought by a caseworker to visit their father, josh powell, sunday afternoon. it was supposed to be a planned supervised four-hour visit, and then all of a sudden the caseworker reports that the children get to the door. they are pulled inside by their father. she smells gas and immediately starts to pound on the door, which is locked by that point. then she goes out

thelma gutierrez has more from washington. it is sad, a bizarre turn of events. us about the investigation now? >> reporter: i can tell you, kira, that investigators on the case since susan powell went missing have traveled to washington. they will be talking with detectives to see if they can go over details, they'll come and visit the scene to again try to determine what, in fact, happened to susan powell. they say that case is very much active. >> he sent an e-mail just before the explosion, right? >> reporter: he did, and that's something they're looking very closely at. they're saying here, investigators are saying this was premeditated. he knew exactly what he was going to do, and they point to that e-mail. we talked to the sheriff's spokesman a short time ago, kira, he told us shortly before this explosion went off in this neighborhood that the attorney received an e-mail and it just simply said i'm sorry, good-bye. also that a cousin of his in texas received the same e-mail, and they're saying there was absolutely no indication that he would have done som
