joining me now on the phone from berkeley, missouri, is mayor theodore hoskins.hank you for your time and for talking with us. the police chief says that the video evidence will show that the teenager had drawn a gun on officers before he was shot. you've had an opportunity to take a look at the video. what did you see? >> i concur. the video clearly states and reveals that the suspect died by the officer. >> you also said that this is not a policeman half cocked. you can't compare this with ferguson or the garner case. >> that's correct. >> what is it? what is this case? >> this case is a case that policemen kill an african-american, and basically we need to determine the facts. and i believe that the fact after a complete review will n not--the policeman was in error. >> in determining what this is, i'm trying to get from you is this a situation where a white police officer was responding to a robbery at this convenience store, and confronted an african-american male, who was a possible suspect here, and that suspect pulled a gun on the officer, is that what th

joining me now is the mayor of berkeley, missouri, theodore hoskins. mr. mayor, thank you for joining us. we heard you say there in george's piece that this is not like the case with michael brown for lots of reasons. what is the biggest reason, aside from the fact that we have video of it? what is the biggest differentiator, in your view? >> thanks for having me. first of all, we have a video that details exactly who occurred. the majority of the african-american community is in shock. when they see the video, i think they will come to the same conclusion that i have, that this officer acted to protect himself and the threat of his life. for that reason, it's not only the city of berkeley but the total community should be behind this officer. >> but do you -- not just as a mayor but as a black mayor -- understand why there are people out there, protesters who you have seen maybe not in the last day or so but in the immediate aftermath who just don't buy it, that they believe that this is racial? >> yes, i understand it very clearly. there is a significant

we now have mayor theodore hoskins joining me live from berkeley. mr.or, welcome. >> thank you for having me this evening. >> we just heard you in that news conference earlier outlining the myriad of reasons why what happened at that gas station behind you is different from what happened a couple miles down the road in august. do you get the sense that people in your community are listening and that they understand what happened there is not the same as what happened in ferguson? >> i believe they do. there's a distinct difference between what occurred in ferguson and what's happening in berkeley although similarities are that we have two black teenagers killed by two white policemen. if you review the tape and the video of the one that occurred last night, you see that the victim initiated this by pointing a gun at the policeman before he fired and i reviewed that video. >> let's talk about the video. you have looked at the video. i'm sure more closely than any of us have. explain to me -- i want to hear you explain what exactly happened. i know this o

. >> i want to ask you in the case of berkeley, the mayor there, theodore hoskins, he is african-american himself, he's reviewed the basic facts of his case and from what he understands this is nothing like the other cases mentioned. he sounds like his narrative and what he's seen matches the narrative from police. that this 18-year-old had a gun, pulled it on the officer who shot to protect his own life. do you think it's helpful that the mayor is himself african-american? do you think he will still be discredited by those who feel like there's a bigger problem and that somehow the mayor is betraying them by not being on their side? >> well, i think that's exactly what they're going to see. they're going to say he's part of the established -- part of the problem. and the agenda, or really the chanting theme of these protesters really is is a white cop shoots a black man or a black teen. but nobody accounts for the conduct of the person that is truly the suspect. they get up in the morning. they put a gun in their waistband. they go out into public. nobody told this young teen to pull tha
