any relationship to theodore roosevelt? >> yeah. it's no coincidence. my 4-year-old's name is theodore. and he's named partially in honor of theodore roosevelt, because theodore roosevelt has so many admirablalties. he loved nature. i hope my theodore loves nature. he had exuberant energy. definitely my 4-year-old exhibits that. he made a difference. everybody hopes that. >> steve chase, one of the things i picked up from being here is you have a facility with rooms to rent. i mean, a facility that people can come in and put on a conference and all that. how does that relate to the outside world kane just the average company or organization rent it? >> well, the important thing to remember about this place is, it's a center for conservation leadership. and that doesn't only mean the federal government. that means everybody voved in conservation, whether it be the feds, state government, non-government groups, or corporations. and we think the only way to address or conservation challenges in the future is through partnerships across all those sectors. so

and so my book isn't just about theodore roosevelt. it's about how we got to where this triumph story. we do have a great system. look at the map we have. we're not maintenancing properly due to not enough funding or wildlife refuge system. and commercialization is always encoaching on these. people don't like it in florida if you want to build a development. you mean i can't build a condo complex because of a panther? it's always that balance. >> how do we look to other countries? are there other countries doing the same thing we're doing? >> all around the world, theodore roosevelt was in my opinion the progenitor of the global wildlife projection movement. if he were alive today, it's like a cover of "time" magazine had lately, he would be fighting, as his great grandson, theodore roosevelt iv is right now, to save these great animals of the planet that we're losing. t.r. loved them. he was not what we call by modern terms a kind of wholistic -- he believed in hunting. he did not believe in hunting so you make a species extinct. so,

>> that's theodore roosevelt with the great naturalist john muir in 1903. roosevelt becomes president in 1901 because mckinley was assassinated. he is sworn in this buffalo. he keeps policies similar to mckinley. he doesn't. two months as president, t.r. starts this aggressive conservation program because he had created the first game boon and -- he created the first wild life protection for big game group. he was a member of the audubon society and as governor of new york, t.r. had been considered a radical on preservation of natural resources. in 1903, t.r. gets on the train and goes to yellowstone with john burrows. then he goes to the grand canyon and ends up in the redwoods of northern california and then goes to yosemite. here is the president of the united states with john muir and they camp out. they camp out under these redwood trees which roosevelt thought the redwoods were great ca they drals. he would use religious imagery of redwoods. they slept in a snowstorm without a tent and he said the greatest day i ever spent in my life freezing in a snow

the theodore roosevelt study center. >> at rice university nourks i teach a class on theodore roosevelt and conservation. meaning, i have been informing myself lady bird johnson. up until the present time viewing in the warming. i wanted to see all that. when did dot reagan diaries? >> what we have doing this year is bringing out the complete diary in a boxed set. i was working on this book for a long time. i picked one. when you go there. on my field-o notes you are the expert. help me. in the main office, we have the clippings. at that time when i'm writing it, it becomes chronological. in 1988, he wrote this whole book. i can't write about 80 of them >> before i forget it, your wife ann and your three kids. what are their names? >> so nice of you to ask. my oldest daughter is six named after the painter thomas heart benton. second i had an unkell that was killed before i met him. i'm going to call him johnny. ke make that decision when he gets older. >> he's four? >> yes. my youngest is two, cass eddie is her name. it's from a character from on the road. it's an irish sounding which

you can't understand the essence of theodore roosevelt if you don't understand darwin and the understanding of america. >> who introduced roosevelt to darwin? >> it's interesting, roosevelt's father was an early reader of darwin. t.r. when 14 or 15, he was in egypt and he writes about darwin. in fact, brian, in my book he draws out how we evolved from the stork. roosevelt has himself evolving from an stork. and draws pictures from it and shows his brother evolving from apes. darwin's species came out in 1858. and by the time that roosevelt went to harvard in 1878, majoring in natural studies, darwin was the rage. and i argue in this book that darwin is the center figure in roosevelt's intellectual life. and what some don't agree with in roosevelt's life, and the biggest power in the world. that's one side, and he erroneously ventured into darwinism a bit. and he had his understanding of natural resource management and how you save species and entire environments. he was a great lover of the prairie. and theodore roosevelt felt more comfortable in kansas or nebraska. he would get sea sick, h

so theodore roosevelt as president would plant trees, even for corn. and back then you had to have trees around the corn. you had to keep a forest around it just to blunt winds. so the wildlife wasn't just about limits, or protecting animals. it had a mission of helping farmers and people living in the wild. and co-exist with nature that was economical and aesthetic. >> going back to the first time you decided to come to this facility. how did it happen? where did you find out that it existed? >> i wanted to begin my book with the birds that t.r. created, and the first was pelican island, florida. i went to it, and you can't walk on it. you can step on birds' nets. there are many off of our coast, pelican island, pelicans would come and breed and nest there. and they would all be in a cluster. but the women's institute wanted a feather for women's cap. so people would come and gun them all down. and they were massacring birds. there would be heaps of dead birds for a feather. we were losing species in florida. you think that the west was wild? florida

theodore roosevelt was the starting point for the american conservation movement. rachel carson plays the same role with the american environmental movement. it has different concerns than roosevelt had. a little more holistic concerns, concerns about toxins and pollutants, endangered species, preserving all species, things that even might have been predators or pests. beginning in 1962 with the environmental movement for her. that began. in 1901 with the roosevelt presidency is where the conservation movement began. >> you told me you have a son named theodore. your relationship, any relationship there to the president? >> it's not a coincidence. he is named in honor of theodore roosevelt. theodore roosevelt had so many admirable qualities. he loved nature, as my son does. he had exuberant energy. my four year-old exhibits that. and he made a difference. and everybody knows that. >> you have a facility where there are rooms where people can come to put on a conference. how does that relate to the outside world? can the average company or organization print it? >> t

if you go north to north dakota is theodore roosevelt national park. you are going to see buffalo in the wild, antelope. it's one of these great places in america. summers in montana, you are getting a lot of forest fires now. the whole skywmÑ is just lit up hope any the obama administration will do more to protect the missouri river. it's prayerry lands. so often, we haven't trezz you'red. these areas, i feel more happy in. better than the coast. >> had you been working on this wuke? >> i was. i have a pangs and have been collecting. roosevelts papers i had in harvard. library of congress has his papers on micro feachfeesh what has happened is people are looking in his correspondence for issues of panama canal. t.r., when he trained in san antonio had to have animals around him. he had a cougar cub, a gold eagle and a dog. to train his men, he had three animals with him all the time. he would write letters about the cougar biting a man's foot. in the white house, he had a pony in the elevator and a pet badger that he would feed potatos. he didn't have
