this. we have been more competitive than any other city in this state. we are about to do a full funding grant agreement to get close to $1 billion of federal money, back into your city to complete that project. i feel 100% confident that we are going to get it, save some disaster on november 3. i have every confidence that we can deliver in this. that project is already doing the utility relocations, construction jobs are already being advanced. you can see the staging area as you are stuck in traffic on third street. something else we are working on. doyle drive, central subway, treasure island, a view hunters point, redoing parks, streets, valencia, cesar chavez. i will close with just a few thoughts -- soma mid market sixth street, fifth street, seventh street. here we go again, another mayor over promising, under delivering. i agree with you. i do not know if i over promised -- but i do not feel like i have delivered. at the board of supervisors, there was one person who killed that development plan. thank god for -- [laughter] that is the great warr

there are eight blocks around the park, only one is treated with care by this city. it's the 700 block of steiner street where the painted ladies are. all of the rest of us are treated like orphans. and this proposal would dramatically improve the northern block next to on steiner street and do something to improve the whole view of the park. and i say to you that it seems to me from listening to everybody there is an equal protection clause for trees in this city. and some trees aren't very good trees. and some are. let's do the right thing and produce a better situation by replacing the existing trees with the ones the applicant has proposed. >> next speaker. >> good evening, commissioners. i live in the 800 block of grove street. just a couple of blocks away from steiner. and i have lived there for 30 years. for 30 years, i've wondered why such a notly row of trees would be on such a wonderful glock block. i realize there's an ordinance that also in 30 years living in this city, i realize the ordinance has changed and if they are too rigid, they do a disservice to

they know that there is something special and magical about this city and this region. and that is why we are here. that is why i am here. and i am grateful that you are here. i am grateful for the extraordinary contribution of the people from mexico and central america. i think that this is interesting and appropriate to notice that san francisco county has the distinction as it relates to the latino community that is unique among the 58 counties. we have more latino representatives. -- >> this is not the case with the other counties. we have these in el salvador and nicaragua, as well as mexico. not everybody understands this and we are celebrating this remarkable collection. the city of san francisco took the lead as the city of refuge after the civil wars in the 1980's. we established, firmly, the foundation that marks so much of what makes this city a special place. it is mocked by those who do not understand and who did not want to understand, and this is trivialized by political campaigns and this should not be diminished by sound bites and in political campaigns

like so many other nights in this great city, tonight is special. not just because of the award being received, which honors otter this from generations who have made this city great and have been made great by the city. no city invites the hard to soar like san francisco does. and renowned san francisco and may have set a better when she said the some of them -- synonym for san francisco is inspiration. most people think that cities inspire leaders and leaders inspire cities, but i would like to add that artists inspired cities and cities inspire artists. who knows which in print -- which inspiration comes first? it does not really matter, what matters is that happens. right here in our city, generation after generation. we are proud to participate tonight in the recognition of one of music's greatest artists. to continue to fulfill the pledge from one year ago to expand the coverage of the arts and support arts in our community. we want to thank you for allowing us to move out on this rewarding mission, thanking you for the opportunity to serve ton

if ever there was a symbol of how this great city takes care of its family, it is this building. i want to say thank-you to mitch katz, who at as the mayor has said is the best of the best. he is a remarkable leader for the city. under challenging times, he manages a health-care city -- a health care center with great grace. thank you again. to the great city family, to the board of supervisors, to my colleagues in the state legislature,, it is a thrill to be with you. to. cutler, who is here representing the wonderful residence. we are thrilled you have this beautiful home in which to live. this is really full circle. laguna honda was first challenged because it was seismically unsafe. it was the unchallenged because it had 30 person wards, and that was unacceptable. and so the work again. we said "yes we can," and now we say yes we did. we transform laguna honda into a remarkable long-term care facility for the residents of this great city. i was really privileged to be able to carry legislation. it was not easy, but we did come up with 200 million more dollars to put into this

heart in one city, and i believe that whether people voted for me or not, they care deeply about this city, and i want to try to engage them in how we bring the city together to move forward. i really believe that everybody needs a voice in the district of columbia, and there should be a role for everybody. in a much smaller way, this is exactly how we have tried to operate the council. we have every member and chaired a committee on the council, got them involved in the activities of the legislative body, the activities of the city, and have everybody feel like they had a role, and that is exactly what i want to do with our citizens. let me assure everybody also that we will not be turning back and the clocks on school reform. we will be moving full speed ahead. as a product of the public schools, who has seen the good days and bad days in a public education in this city, i am firmly committed to doing what we need to do to move forward for better outcomes for our children. hopefully, no one will forget that i was part of the efforts to move school reform, education reform through the cou

i would argue important this nationn francisco has now achieved a 77% diversion rate, the highest in america. no big city can lay claim to diverting that much of their waste, and that is why that composting requirement was so important. this is why our efforts to consumption and distribution and the like of plastic water bottles is so important. it is because we want to reduce that waste going into the landfill. we want to reduce the burden on our environment. we want to create jobs. the folks on the line behind me and above me, those are folks that have employment because of these programs. we have added over 118 people in the last couple of years to the roles of the employed in these green collar jobs because of the recycling and composting programs. we actually created economic stimulus by building facilities like this and putting people to work to do that job. ball the folks out here in the hard hats are also supported by people in the office is doing the processing, doing accounting, doing the bookkeeping, so there is a multiple in terms of jobs that are created because of programs like we have esta

city. so, again, reason why we are preparing now to deal with this effect. city of los angeles port is one of the busiest in the -- it is the busiest in the united states and with la long beach harbor one of the busiest in the world. the port is in the midst of a serious re-evaluation of its infrastructure needs based on the effects of global climate change which again we can anticipate and which are going to require major infrastructure improvements. there's a bridge between areas of the port that's only a few feet above sea level. obviously that bridge will not be functional for much longer into the future. so we are in a mode of looking at preventionb
