each of you work every single day to move this city, right? but how can we make sure that the city is moving fast enough for you? i think we need to make sure that we're on time, and when i'm thinking about this issue, i'm thinking about it from an intersectional lens, so an intersectional lens means i'm looking at it from multiple layers, right? so if we're going to be solving from transit equity, it means real change, particularly for our communities of color. we need greater efficiency particularly to communities in the southeast. we need better reliability, we need improved access for our vulnerable folks so they can afford to take muni, but also, our folks who are differently abled and disabled so they can get to where they want to go. but in order to have transit equity, we need people. we need people to do this work. we need each and every one of y you. and i know that each and every one of you live at intersections. you're not just a driver, an administrator. you are a black driver, you are a brown professional administrator. you bring

of new york city bill de blasio late on thursday as you mentioned 95 cases of coronavirus in this city about 320 in the state of new york those numbers relatively low compared to many other parts of the world and even compared to a couple other cities in the u.s. but new york city is bracing for a potential explosion of even more cases and that's why so much of this city is shut down right now let me just give you an example broadway theaters forced to be shut down the metropolitan museum of art closed carnegie hall shut down these eve of natural history shut down the new york city opera shut down this just gives you an idea of how much things are shut down here in this city because of coronavirus just within the last 24 hours or so this city feels quiet too i would say there's only about feels like there's only about 25 percent of what normally the amount of people that you would see on the streets year and we're also starting to see a scarcity issue very long lines and empty shelves in supermarkets shows with no fruit no bread no milk people are rushing to the markets to get anything

we don't want the next generation fighting for the same policy that should already exist in this city that protect and support women. so today's honorees represent, as i said, incredible women who really have focused on advancing the rights of women, who are spending a lot of their time trying to get women registered to vote, to address what we know, even in san francisco as we see a lower voter turnout, we know disproportionately that it impacts people of color and women. so getting women registered, getting them to turn out to vote is important and having organizations that are dedicated to that cause is also significantly important. our first honoree is a local american woman of color who is a child of immigrants who came to the united states. she worked tirelessly to engage women, register them to vote, and connect them with volunteer and civic opportunities. have you ever come across people who say what do i do? how do i get involved? what's the next step? people have no idea what to do. nadia has been doing this work to help motivate and get women, especially women who have not

and the fact is, i think the challenge that we face in this city and actually throughout this country is not having an honest conversation about people who struggle with substance use disorder. we know that it's happening and playing itself out on our streets and people are complaining about it. but the fact is complaining about it and moving people from space to space to space does not solve the problem. if anybody has had a family member or their own personal experience with substance use disorder, you know it's just not that simple to say here, here's help, or here's support or here are services you have to get better. people who suffer with substance use disorder have real challenges, and i think we have to change the kind of services that we provide to help people who deal with those challenges. we've been lucky in san francisco that we have incredible people and organizations that have led the way, including the aids foundation and the delancey foundation, haight-ashbury foundation, who have put themselves on the line for people that are struggling. and what's so amazing about t

two days ago, president rodrigo duterte announced there would be a lockdown on this city to try to stop we are seeing it enforced. we saw an exodus of people leaving the city prompting questions about whether it was a good idea to have these two days to allow people to leave, perhaps they could spread the virus around the country. that's the question being asked but we are seeing police officers handing out these leaflets with all the advice about washing hands and social distancing and also testing people's temperatures on this checkpoint. if they are not showing a temperature above 38 degrees, they are allowed to pass, noting where they are going to but it seems contrary to the idea of having a lockdown on the city, people are being allowed to leave here today unless they have symptoms of covid—19. and howard, the country has confirmed it has 111 cases of the virus, doesn't it? what happened around a month ago is we saw the first three cases in this country. this is the country where we saw the first death outside of china and there was a month where nothing much really happened. peop
