we've been hearing from judge thokozile masipa in the past few minutes. that the court is unable to find oscar pistorius guilty of premeditated murder. the state has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder, and then she went on to say that murder without that aspect, that element of premeditation was also not proven beyond reasonable doubt, so we're here discussing the options that judge masipa will have when the court resumes after lunch, and we hear the rest of her judgment on discussing this with former judge william heath. and so the two options we mentioned, and one is complete acquittal. it's one of south africa's most high profile cases ever. >> many members of the public will be most unhappy, because of their own little prejudices, because of their views that he acted guilty. but when you analyze it cold, you can see why he's acquitted of the more serious charges. >> reporter: another judge -- this issue of what the public thinks of an outcome, how much does that play in your mind? >> it's actually irre

judge thokozile masipa said she believed pistorius shot his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, by accident, mistaking her for a burglar. >> it cannot be said that the accused did not entertain a genuine belief that there was an intruder in the toilet who posed a threat to him. >> reporter: pistorius was also found guilty of negligence when his gun accidentally went off in a crowded restaurant. in a country still struggling with issues of race and violence, reaction to the verdict was swift. forensic scientist dr. david klatzow told us he was astounded at the decision and he believed the judge's interpretation of the law was wrong. was justice served? >> i don't think so. i think that there's a problem, and i think that it is a step backwards for a violent society where there are a lot of people out there with guns. it sends a very negative message out to the country. >> reporter: klatzow said he couldn't understand how the judge came to the conclusion that pistorius didn't intend to kill steenkamp after high feared not one but four shots through the bathroom door. but thokozile masipa said

>speaking calmly and coolly, judge thokozile masipa picked her way through the evidence today. >> the state clearly has not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder. >> reporter: she dismissed as unreliable the testimony of neighbors who said they heard a man and woman arguing in the pistorius house that night. the prosecution had tried to paint a picture of a violent, gun-obsessed man who murdered his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, in a fit of rage. but pistorius has always maintained he shot steenkamp by accident, mistaking her for an intruder hiding in the bathroom. we managed to get a rare glimpsed in the athlete's home where the shooting took place. gun in hand, oscar made his way down this narrow corridor, connecting his bedroom to the bathroom. it's a surprisingly long walk. imagine even more so in complete darkness when all this happened 18 months ago. he then turned the corner and told the court he shouted to reeva to call the police before firing four shots through his locked bathroom door. it's those shots that the judge condemned tod
