nbc bay area thom jensen has been there for us. and what do you see first hand? >> reporter: you can see the plume behind me. it has mushroomed at the top. the man managing this fire says he is confident. he will be able to protect the towns. and he is not as confident about this part of the fire. this giant plume that has been growing with active fire growing behind it all day. he says he thinks he can stop it from going into yosemite. he has been calling in a lot of air strikes from retardant bombers. ahead of the fire as it does move to the east towards the park. the merced river is between this part of the fire and could stop it. but if one of those embers blows it could ignite it. an oakland native says communities of this area cannot afford for tourists to stay away. >> these corridors are a big part of the resources, their livelihood. >> reporter: that cal fire manager is making the calls on this fire says that the smoke is not terribly bad as you are looking into the gateway to yosemite right now. although there are concerns for people with respiratory pr

nbc bay area thom jensen remain in the front lines and captured these videos. he is with us now near yosemite. will they end up closing yosemite some time soon? >> reporter: doesn't look like it right now. all of the lodges, and the campground is open. visibility is limited. we did look at live pictures from the park. and if you do have respiratory problems or other issues, you might want to stay away because the smoke, could cause problems for folks. that giant plume behind us, that has been building up all day. the park is on a few miles on the other side of that. the plume was fairly small when we got here a few hours ago, but building up. right into the park. it has been growing all day actively burning. helicopters doused one of the three main heads outside of coulterville. a few miles away the u.s. forest service dropping fire retardant. >> three major distinct heads, it makes it complex. >> reporter: one of those heads moving closer to homes and people. the fire moves closer to coulterville over night and crews hitting this ridge only a mile and a half w

a lot of concern today. >> thank you thom. let's give you more stats on the fire. day five. smoke and air quality a big concern. park rangers say the fire was 35-mile from the boundary of yosemite at its closest. rangers are warning visitors that they may have respiratory problems. this is from the south side of the lake. for the second day in a row, heavy haze forming. the city you are looking at was shot by the national guard and it shows the aerial views. check this out, that is someone's car taken by the san mateo fire department. it shows the commander car covered in that fire retardant. coming up at six, more how bay area crews are aiding. and a strain that it then puts in our local department. >>> two brush fires in santa clara county. the 11 off the road. highway 85 near the bascom exit in los gatos. another fire in los altos hills. this is altimon and black hills. firefighters quickly moved in and knocked down the flames. >>> the university is making it difficult to bring a conservative speaker on the campus. this comes after an earlier event when it turned violent.

thom jensen talked to marchers along the embarcadero. they had various reasons for thinking these were justified but the latest tweet generating a lot of controversy. >> reporter: of course, as you know, impeachment can only come if the president commits treason, bribery, other high crimes or misdemeanors. still questions about whether or not that happened in the meddling possibly with russians or in the investigation by the fbi into the russian possibly russians collude with the trump campaign. one man told me he was energized by that tweet, though, peggy. and it was too much for him to remain quiet anymore. he was already thinking about joining the rezftance movement. and that tweet was it for him. people continue to show up in big numbers for these presidential protests, though. you can sense the passion. these marchers had as they walked toward the fisherman's wharf chanting anti-president trump slogans and carrying signs calling for his impeachment. the tweet the final straw for some. for others the thing that will keep them energiz

good morning, thom. >> reporter: laura and sam, good morning.le this bay area news group investigation of the nearly 900 properties that they looked at that were flagged for inspection since 2011 nearly 80% of those were never inspected. december's deadly ghostship fire, of course, brought attention to this problem after 36 people were killed. they exposed the problem of lack of fire inspections within the city. in the aftermath the mayor agreed to double the number of fire inspectors here from 6 to 12 to make sure all of the properties are up to code. the bay area news group discovered some commercial buildings across the city have never been inspected. the city has no way of knowing if flaws have been fixed and have no power to make the owners pay for repairs. fire officials blame the faulty software program here at the city that is supposed to flag those properties to make sure that they are being looked at and the inspections are taken care of and the repairs are put in place. they say there there is a problem with that software package, som
