nbc bay area's thom jensen was there as well. he joins us now. how did that go? >> reporter: it went very well. a very energetic crowd, very energetic and inspirational speakers. this visit was really about showing these students that they have all kinds of opportunities in the future to work as scientists, as engineers, or in all sorts of different science and technology fields. the students were given what's called learning lunch boxes filled with experiments meant to inspire their imaginations. they were also shown just how much the s.t.e.m. world needs diverse thinkers. a big part of the message is introducing them to people who look like them and who are also oakland or bay area natives who have gone on to successful s.t.e.m. careers. that's why yvonne cagle was there. she talked about her work in supporting the space missions and as a scientist, as a pilot while the second gentleman explained how his wife, vice president kamala harris, is helping advance the future of u.s. space exploration. >> with all this new space exploration, there's an opportunity to
