senator thom tillis, republican of north carolina, told me that today was kind of school of rock. it's to teach elon musk and vivek ramaswamy how congress works, how it becomes a bill, how some things they're going to be able to do without congress and some things that are going to take congressional action, that congress is going to have to pass a law to do and that's where it's going to be really interesting because you're going to see the president take a lot of actions to try to cut government spending. meanwhile there's going to be a lot of boundary pushing, i'm told, by republicans that the president is going to go as far as he can without the help of congress who needs to pass a law in some instances. so this can become quite tricky and it could actually go afoul of the law. what they're absolutely focused on is cutting government workers. in one way they think they're going to do that is by making them return to the office in person and they think that government workers are going to leave in droves and that automatically is going to shrink the size of government. >> liste

do you think your colleagues, thom tillis, susan collins, you think they are prepared to spend billionspayer dollars to fund this mass deportation plan? >> yeah. well, that's quickly becoming the $100 billion question, right? because the outcome of the election is what it is. in the senate the ratio will be 53 republicans to 47 democrats. now thankfully legislation on the book of the policy that will or won't be done over the next couple of years, it's still subject to the filibuster threshold of 60 members. democrats do still have some leverage here. but when it comes to the spending changes that they can effectuate through reconciliation, it's a simple majority, just like the confirmation of the cabinet and other appointees of president-elect trump, it's a simple majority. are there enough republicans that can stand true, not just to fundamental morals and values, but the constitution of the united states to say no. you rattled off a handful of republican senators that have shown themselves to stand up to do what's right time and time again. and i pray, i hope, that that will continue

other people it could be a much more efficient process, people up in 2026 like joni ernst, like thom tillis, like mike rounds. all these people are more independent-minded. they're at least willing to pose questions in the course of a process where they may ultimately get to yes, but it's clear if you look at the president's advisers popping up on every conservative cable channel and other avenue to make sure these senators remember trump put them there whether or not that's true. >> eric, this was not your first opportunity to sit down with trump, but this time you described him as more subdued and less verbose. give us some more details about what left you with that impression. >> well, you know, it's interesting because as he is preparing to embark on a radical second term agenda, as far as just tone in the sense of what it's like being around him, he's nowhere near as defensive, nowhere near as combative, there's kind of more poise to trump. i think he's feeling more confident and assertive than any point in the past about the way he's going to be able to govern in which he's not expect
